Numb.
Bianca Bailey was numb as she sat on the stand and explained to the court what her now, ex husband had done to her. Sitting there at the table on the defendant's side, he wore a navy blue jumpsuit, indicating he was at risk for suicide, and both his wrists and ankles were shackled. He looked everywhere but at her, a forlorn expression on his face.
His features were familiar, yet unfamiliar, like a stranger who frequents the same Starbucks as you on your way to work in the morning. It was strange, feeling that way about a man she had loved and been married to for over 9 years. They'd been friends since elementary school, but hadn't made their interest in each other known their sophomore year of high school at just the ripe age of 15.
They'd been attached at the hip throughout both high school and college, proving the peers that had called their mutual infatuation for each other puppy love wrong. It wasn't puppy love that made him drop down on one knee at her graduation dinner and ask her to marry him. It wasn't puppy love that made her say yes and continue to say yes to whatever her husband had needed her to. Supporting him emotionally and financially as he struggled through medical school, losing his father, and every other up and down they encountered, because that's what a dedicated spouse was supposed to do.
They'd grown together, learned together, had all their firsts together, dedicated their lives to each other—and now, none of that mattered.Just two years ago, everything was fine between them, wonderful even. He went to work at one of the most prestigious hospitals in the area as a family physician and she cooked for her celebrity clients before returning home to each other and sharing how their days went, eating dinner, and kicking back in the lazy boy in front of the TV to watch a few true crime shows before retiring to bed. When their schedules permitted, they'd surprise each other with dates—dinner, dancing, movies, arcades—whatever they felt would put a smile on the others face. It was blissful right up until they discussed starting a family.
Neither spouse fond of wasting time, they set an appointment with one of the most renowned fertility specialists in the area, also a close colleague of her husband. Karen Lewinsky was her name and apparently she and Rome were as thick as thieves, so much so that when his results concluded he was infertile, Karen altered them for him.
Yes, altered them.
Not only did she change his results, but hers too. She was devastated when Dr. Lewinsky had read those results. "Infertile? Couldn't be, she was perfectly healthy right?" was all she could think as the doctor discussed treatment options—and of course that's what she opted for. How could she not when her husband had stared down at her with such disappointment in his eyes?
She endured year after year of painful fertility treatments only to be told time and time again that they weren't working. She felt like a failure, a burdensome, barren wife to a husband she no longer deserved. She suffered mentally, physically, and emotionally and all because of the fragility of her husband's ego.
He had daddy issues sure, but she hadn't know how deep they ran. Apparently so deep, he'd risk his livelihood and his colleague's as well as his marriage to avoid being seen as anything less than perfect.
And it didn't stop there.
As if things weren't fucked up enough, Rome decided to have an affair with Karen. As she lived in unnecessary pain from having hormone injections and medications she didn't need pumped into her weekly, gained more weight than she was comfortable with, and slipped into a deep depression—he was spending all his free time fucking Karen.
And it doesn't stop here either.
Somewhere amongst this time, Rome came to his senses. He wanted to confess everything to her in hopes that she'd stay with him, but Karen thought it was too much of a risk. If she'd taken it badly, both would lose their licenses and be charged for their crimes. Karen was smart, smart enough to blackmail Rome for money and sex to keep him quiet about their deeds. That's what Bianca had read on his laptop when she'd gone into his office to place a heartfelt, handwritten letter onto his desk for him to find when he got home.
Thinking she must be mistaken, she went through his emails, all the way back to the year they'd gotten their first fertility tests and sure enough, the original document stated that he was infertile and that she was was completely normal.
This is why her body was going haywire—the weight gain, the terrible and unpredictable periods, the depression, the headaches, the constant fatigue. Everything she'd been suffering from for the past two years was due to Karen prescribing her hormones and medications her body didn't need. Her estrogen levels were so high that they were affecting her overall quality of life.
Bianca had never been so angry in her life. She'd never forget the look on Rome's face when he'd come home to her usually non-confrontational self waiting on him at the door, his laptop in her hand. She could see it in his eyes that he knew she knew, but before he could even open his mouth to say anything, she'd lost her entire mind—throwing the laptop and everything else she could get her hands on at him while she screamed her voice raw. It was scary, the way she lost all control of her rational self, her hurt and anger acting for her. It had taken two officers to pull her off him and ever since she'd come to in handcuffs in the back of a cruiser just a year ago, she'd been numb.
In the space of a day, her whole world had crumbled right in front of her eyes and she still hadn't picked up the pieces. If you had told her a year ago, she'd be here in a courtroom testifying against her ex husband for the diabolical crime he'd committed against her, she would've laughed hysterically.
In her mind, there was no other way to describe it than a cruel twist of fate.
A/N: New Story Alert 🚨
As stated in the description, this book will have slow updates. I'm getting impatient with keeping all these stories in my drafts. I feel like putting them out here will give me motivation to work on them so look forward to more of them(maybe).
Everything you need to know about the characters will be revealed in the story, but I will tell you that this is a true reverse harem. There will be no boy x boy in this story between the members.
First two chapters are up, as per JiminBeJammin tradition 💜
