"Hello. Is this Kim Taehyung I'm speaking to?" I ask the intercom.
"Yeah it is...and you must be Kang Hee-do. I'm letting you in." a deep voice replies and the door makes a sound indicating it unlocked.
So my new roommate is a male. This is not ideal but I desperately needed residency close to University and his was the only one available.
I make my way --with slow progress because of my heavy luggage-- to an elevator and press the button for the third floor.
This place looks clean and safe so far and my University is within walking distance so I actually lucked out when I found Kim Taehyung's offer online.
The door to room 306 is already open and I allow myself in. I'm standing in a room that is half kitchen, half living room. The theme of the house it seems is grey and white. The kitchen has grey cupboards, grey kitchen appliances and a grey marble island. The living room has a flat-screen TV and grey couches. The walls are white. Everything is neat and modern.
"Hello?" I call out.
A tall, handsome man around my age emerges from around a corner.
"Hello Kang Hee-do. Follow me to your room."
He's a bit straight forward but I shouldn't judge him this early.
We walk around the corner he came from, into a hallway.
"That's the bathroom," Taehyung says pointing to the first room on the left, "My room," He says pointing to the room next to it, "and yours." He says finally pointing to the room across from his.
Before I can say anything Taehyung immediately starts explaining the house rules. "I expect you to pay your share of rent every month, if you fail to do this you're kicked out. Your food is your own responsibility. Laundry gets done every second day and we can take turns with that. You need to ask for my permission before bringing guests over, I'll do the same....Uh yeah that's all I can think of right now. You got any questions?"
"Umm... do you also attend the University?" I ask.
"Yes I do. Is that all?" he deadpans.
I blank out completely. Kim Taehyung is a pretty intimidating guy.
"Okay then. Here's the key for the buildings front door and the card for this unit's front door. Get yourself comfortable. I'll be in my room but only bother me if it's for something really important." And with that he disappears into his room, closing the door behind him.
Thoughts on my room-mate:
Firstly, he is EXTREMELY handsome. Like the more I look at him, the more good-looking he appears to be. No complaints there.
Secondly, he has a bit of a dull, slightly cold personality but room-mates don't need to be friends so it won't be a problem.....hopefully.
I am grateful he is in the same University as me so I'm not completely alone.
I wonder if we're in the same major. I look at his shut door. I'm curious but I remind myself that he doesn't want to be unnecessarily bothered. I go into my own room instead.
It's a spacious room with a single bed, built-in wardrobe and a table positioned in front of the window so that I can daydream out of it when studying.
I look out of the window. I can see the large University, with it's intimidating seriousness, from here. Nice view. I start unpacking.
***
It's supper time and I've just finished unpacking. I'm so proud of myself for taking this big, independent step in my life. I've messaged my parents and they were a bit skeptical about my room-mate being a man. Well that's a shame but I'm not moving out no matter what they say. I am an adult now.
I walk out of my room and am immediately face to face with a briefly confused Taehyung. He just left his room as well. I guess he forgot he had a room-mate for a second. I quickly look him up and down in what I hope is a discreet manner. Wow Kim Taehyung, all black is definitely your colour.
I crack a smile and say, "I'm going out for supper."
"Me too." He replies still staring at me.
"ha ha" I laugh awkwardly. "Um since I just got here I don't actually know where to go. Could you give me some suggestions please?"
Ugh why did I have to say that? He's gonna tell me I should google it. I'm so st--
"Eat with me tonight. My treat since it's a special day today." He walks away and I quickly follow, eyes on his back.
That was unexpected to say the least. I'm having dinner with a guy. Isn't this sorta like a date? The last one I've been on ended up being a disaster. No. I'm getting ahead of myself this isn't a date. But damn, so far University life is not bad. Not bad. At. All.
