CONTEXT: fluff, communicating, cuddling, pre-canon, sharing a bed, alex overthinking and being stubborn as per usual

Alex, being a whole head taller than Brian, was the designated big spoon in the relationship. He didn't mind, honestly just extremely elated that he was able to sleep in the same bed as Brian in the first place. Therefore, every night that Brian or Alex were spending together Alex would end up holding Brian as they fell asleep. This was becoming more often than not as Brian got progressively more clingy towards Alex, which he really didn't mind—quite the opposite, and was thus coming over his house or vice versa almost every single night. Alex's closet was becoming overrun with Brian's clothes, so much so that he had a designated half of his closet for Brian. At this rate, they'd be moving in together soon.

However, there was only one problem. Alex loved holding Brian, wrapping around him like a protective shield as they slept, but sometimes he wanted to be held too. He wanted to feel Brian's strong arms around him again, face buried in his back. Ever since the first night they spent sharing a bed, Alex yearned for the feeling of his boyfriend to hold him for once instead of the other way around. But Alex was far too stubborn to say that out loud, and so he didn't and wallowed in mild annoyance while trying to drop hints at his feelings about it. Brian, ever oblivious as he is (bless his heart), seemed none the wiser to Alex's hints.

Or maybe Alex was bad at dropping hints.

Alex was lamenting about it sitting on his couch with Brian watching some nature documentary when Brian turned to him with a mildly concerned expression. "Alex?" Brian began, "Is something the matter?" Alex turned to Brian with a confused look.

"No, why?" The lie fell from his lips without another thought. Brian narrowed his eyes at him slightly, disbelieving because he really wasn't as oblivious as Alex pretended he was. Brian grabbed Alex's hand, gently squeezing it after interlocking their fingers.

"Something is definitely wrong." Brian didn't ask this time, he stated it as a fact, because it was one. "You're sitting over there all moody-like and reserved. You always do that when you're upset about something." He said matter-of-factly. Alex frowned, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose.

"Maybe I am, but it has nothing to do with you." Alex tried to give Brian his best comforting expression as he spoke. It didn't work, just making Brian more sturdy in his belief.

"Alex, please just tell me what it is." Brian frowned. "I want to know why you're upset at me, please." He pleaded. Alex felt his heart break a little bit. He wasn't mad at Brian, just a little frustrated. Did Brian actually think he was mad about something? Brian never did anything wrong.

"It's stupid, really, really stupid. I promise I'm not mad at you for anything." Alex avoided answering still. He was feeling a bit foolish suddenly for being so worked up over such a small thing. Brian was the love of his life and here he was, complaining to himself that he didn't get held enough when he should be lucky he has a boyfriend in the first place.

"Just tell me. I don't care if it's stupid to you, it's not to me. I love you, and I want to know what's wrong." Brian didn't back down, giving Alex a stern, yet soft, look. Alex chewed his lower lip anxiously, a bad habit he had picked up, and debated it in his mind. With a sigh, he began speaking again.

"I— I don't know. I'm just." Alex paused, embarrassed. He felt his face redden as he finally got the words out of his mouth. "I wish you held me more when we're cuddling in bed." He mumbled it slightly, face burning hot with embarrassment. There was silence for a moment before Brian began laughing. Alex's frown deepened. "What's so funny?"

"I just, wow, you've really been hung up for weeks about wanting to be the little spoon? You could've just asked." Brian smiled up at him. "Or are you really so stubborn you just wanted me to read your mind and figure it out?" Brian chuckled, smiling wide. Alex ran his free hand over his face, messing up his glasses.

"Shut up." He mumbled quietly. Brian plucked his glasses off of his face and set them on the coffee table before pulling Alex to his feet. "What are you doing, Bry?" Alex asked the shorter man, his eyebrows knitted in confusion.

"We're gonna cuddle, duh." Brian said, pulling Alex into his bedroom. Brian let go of Alex's hand and flopped onto the bed, the bed's springs creaking in protest against the suddenness of his weight. Alex blushed, not in embarrassment this time, and approached the bed where Brian was waiting with wide-open arms. Alex slowly settled himself onto the bed, Brian wrapping his arms around him and nuzzling his face against Alex's back. Their legs intertwined together naturally as Alex cuddled back against Brian.

This. This is exactly what Alex needed. Being in Brian's arms, being held and protected by the person he loved. He felt at ease laying there as Brian held him tightly; held him like he was the most precious thing that Brian had. It made Alex feel soft and fuzzy inside. "Thank you." Alex whispered, letting his eyes fall closed. Brian hummed, and Alex could feel the vibrations of his chest on his back.

"Of course." Brian replied smoothly. "And next time, just ask. I love you, and you know that I don't mind doing something like this for you. It's nice." Brian pressed a kiss in between Alex's shoulder blades, right where his spine was. Alex huffed and smiled to himself.

"We'll see." He only half-joked, knowing that his constantly anxious and overthinking mind would best him again some day and put them in a similar situation.

"Well, that's a start at the very least."
