Peri

I can't believe he would think so low of me! I love Terry with all my heart! How can he even imagine I would do something to hurt him?

I walk slowly to the guesthouse, sobbing. I didn't even hear James when he came after me.

"Per-Per, have you eaten something today?" He asks as he reaches my side, but then stops talking when he realizes I'm crying.

"I'll kill him!" He says and I jump in fear. I know James is a good man, but he also used to be a pirate, and that makes me sometimes question things he says, like in this moment.

"You'll do no such thing! He's scared for the safety of his son! And can we blame him? Why didn't you fuckin' kill the bastard long ago, James? Why play all the stupid games with him?" I ask and punch him on the chest with both my fists. He wraps his arms around me and holds me, as I cry in his arms like a desperate child.

"I tried multiple times, Peri. But I'm not a killer! I just couldn't do it! I was a coward!" He tells me, and I smile beyond my tears and look at him.

"You were a good man, Captain!" I say, and his eyes soften.

"I'll bring you some pasta so you can eat in peace." He says and I smile again.

"Thank you, James!" I tell him and walk into the guesthouse.

I take off my clothes and jump into the cold shower. I've shifted again and I feel too hot and quite lightheaded. Ten minutes later, when I step out, the pasta is on my bed, on a small tray. I smile again, knowing that I am loved. This is what a family feels like: how they look after each other, how they care about what you feel and what you need, right?

The door rings, and I tighten the towel around my body and go and answer it. Aidan is at the door and smelling like alcohol too. Didn't I just leave his house half an hour ago? How did he get drunk so fast?

"Sorry, I wasn't expecting any guests." I tell him, holding the towel even tighter.

"I had to..  come and.. see you!" He says, pausing between words.

"Go home, Aidan! You're drunk, and you have a 24 hours shift tomorrow." I tell him, and he frowns. Before he can even say anything else, I close the door in his face, but don't lock it.

I walk towards the bed and hear the creaking of the handle as it opens. Did he really just come inside uninvited?

"I thought I told you to go home!" I turn around, feeling my face getting hotter because of the accumulated stress and anger that I keep bubbling inside.

"I..." he starts talking but then pauses. I take a look at him. He looks miserable. His eyes are red and his hair is a total mess. He must have been crying.

"You what, Aidan? Why are you here? Are you here to call me a monster?" I ask him, letting my anger get the best of me.

"You're not a monster!" He says while he looks out the window.

"If I'm not a monster, then why can't you look at me?" I ask him and clench my fists. My cheeks feel like they're burning by now, and so is my forehead.

"I'm sorry!" He says softly, adding a hiccup afterwards that reminds me he is drunk.

"So you're sorry... and I'm not a monster! And I don't want to kidnap your baby? Look into my eyes, Aidan!" I tell him as I grab his chin and lift it up so he can look at me.

"You're burning!" He tells me, and I immediately pull back my hand, nut he catches it. His fingers travel upwards on my forearm. Then he touches my cheeks and forehead.

"Peri, maybe you should talk in the pool!" He says and I nod. I go to the bathroom to put on my bathing suit but a sharp pain hits my temples, followed by a sharp, high-pitched sound. My vision blurs and my hands start shaking uncontrollably, the rest of my body soon following. I try to reach the window to call for help, but I only manage to fall into the bathtub, knocking down all the bottles of shampoo and body wash in my fall.

I hear Aidan's voice screaming at me but I'm already surrendering myself to the darkness and embrace it as an old friend.
