Lizzie's POV

Middle school sucked. There's no nice way to put it, and I'm convinced high school will suck just as bad. I mean sure I have a decent amount of friends and I'm pretty smart, but will that really get me anywhere in high school? I live on Netflix and I'm pretty sure I've watched every last teenage movie on there, and I'm 99% sure I won't fit in at all. The only movie I related to at all was The Heathers and I'd be the one killing people and I don't think that's gonna get me friends.

Carly told me that once we started high school it would get easier, that I'm just scaring myself over nothing. But I can't help it. The whole idea of leaving my seventh grade friends and going into a school with even more people scares the shit out of me.

I've convinced myself that there are 3 things that cause my high school anxiety
1) Not having classes with my friends
2) Not having lunch with my friends
3) No more Isac

The third one is unavoidable, he's not going to the same school, so I'm forced to accept it. That's why it's number 3.

Carly tries to understand, says that she's anxious too, but I know she's not. She was so ready to leave middle school when I met her, not to mention she can make friends.

She keeps telling me I can too, that I need to just break out of my shell, but my shell is so damn comfortable. And it has great wifi.

...

"Honestly, the first day is crucial! You can't just wear your regular clothes and throw your hair up into a ponytail like you do EVERY SINGLE DAY." Carly lectures, standing in front of my closet, criticizing every last thing I owned. "You know what?" She said, still facing my closet.

"What?" I ask nervously, standing on my tip toes and peering over her shoulder.

"We're going shopping." She states, turning quickly and bumping into me, making me stumble back.

"What? Why?" I complain, running my fingers over my clothes. "I like what I have already."

"Nope. You need something new for school. New school, new you." I groan and fall face forward onto my bed, hoping I get smothered and die. "C'mon, we're going to the mall." She says, grabbing me by my ankles and pulling me off of my bed.

Then it hit me. Hot Topic is in the mall. "Yeah, I'll go." I say, standing up from the ground.

"We're not going to Hot Topic." Carly dead panned, shaking her head at me. "You have enough merch as it is." She adds, walking out of my room.

"THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ENOUGH MERCH!" I yell after her, following her out of my room. "C'mon, why not?" I plead, watching as she walks out of my house. "Carly!" I whine, following her yet again.

"We're going to the mall and you're not even going to breathe the hyped up fangirl air of Hot Topic." She says, crossing her arms as she turns to face me.

"Fine." I groan, surrendering. She smiles and grabs my hand, dragging me down the street to her house.

...

After sitting awkwardly in her living room, waiting for her to convince her mom to "put her drivers license to good use," they finally came out, keys in her mom's hand.

We were off to the mall.
To find the "new me," which would probably just be me, but polished as Carly likes to say. When we get dropped off, Carly looks at me, tutting at me. I roll my eyes and trudge behind her, crossing my arms. "You're acting like you're on your way to your death sentence."
