"Stop it! I can't breathe!!" I said to my little sister as i pretended to be dying when she threw a blanket over my head. "LET ME OUT!!" I heard her little footsteps coming towards me as she jumped up and down, trying to get the blanket of my head.
"Good job Lizzy, you saved me!" I said as she applauded herself.
"Now... what do you want to do?" I asked her.
"humm... staory"
"Staory? Ohhh, you mean story! Yeah sure"
I picked up Lizzy, and climbed up the stairs. That's when I spotted him across the window, standing there in the yard, looking at my house.
I couldn't move. My mind explored every single possibility in those few seconds that I was standing there, looking out the window. My mind raced and my heart pounded. I had to know for sure if it was him.
I approached the window, and Lizzy stuck her hand in the glass, saying hello to what she thought to be a harmless neighbor. Her face was filled with joy while mine was filled with horror, as the man's head looked up precisly where we where. He had spotted that little hand that was so used to leaving traces on the clean surfaces, that little hand that I never imagined I could miss so much.
I rushed up the few stairs that were left and ran across the hallway. There was a saferoom where my dad used to hide when this happened.
I might have had adrenaline in my blood at that moment, but I was still holding a four year old child, that screamed in happiness, thinking this was a game. I told her to shush, not knowing this would be the last time i'd be holding her in my arms this way. The man didn't have a child on him, and so very quickly he gained in speed.
I saw him at the other side of the hallway, running towards me as I frantically tried opening the lock to the safe room. My mind was racing and I couldn't remember the numbers. ITS JUST FOUR NUMBERS. But somehow, even with using this lock a lot in my past, I couldn't seem to remember the password.
The man was quickly approaching and I looked out the window, seeing other cars pulling up. As I looked back to the hallway, the man was standing in front of me, leaving no escape.
"What do you want Sam?" I asked, trying to keep my calm.
"I want her, she's mine." He said, looking at Lizzy.
She looked at the man, and happily waved at him. She didn't have a clue on earth that this was her father, and that he certainly wasn't a good man, for all those things he'd done to me years ago.
He gave her a warm smile, and it made me sick, for it was the same smile he'd given me years ago.
"I can't give her to you, she's everything I have."
"Oh, but of course! I won't take her from you, I'm bringing you with us silly!" he said, as tears filled my eyes.
"Oh, don't cry sweetheart. Poor Lizzy has been growing up without a father figure all her life."
"I know she has, don't you think I know? You can't show up after nearly five years, claiming she's yours just because you used my body all those years ago." I said angrily.
All those years, this was what I wanted. This was what I'd dreamed of saying to his face, if one day he'd come to apologize for doing all those awfull things years ago. I'd never thought I'd regret saying something more than what I said to him then. Why would I scream at a crazy psychopath just when my daugher was near. He new I cheerished her more than my own life, for he decided to do what he did next.
"Well, if you think it was bad circumstances she was born in..."
He reached in his pocket and took out a gun. He looked me dead in the eye, not looking away to see how I'd react. He pointed the gun at me, and I closed my eyes, as I was preparing to die right there, in that moment. I heard a gunshot, but felt no pain. Its when I felt the little hand that I was holding slip away from mine, that I realized what had just happened. I opened my eyes, meeting his grey ones as he was smilling at me, with that awfull, creepy look. I looked to my left, seeing my baby collapse to the floor.
I rushed at her side, as I felt as strong grip take my arm, pulling me away from my baby. I was crying hysterically as he pulled me down the hallway. My whole body shattered, and I fell to the floor, reaching my hand out to her, as if she'd stand up and come give me a hug. He took me on his shoulder and carried me away, as I saw her body becoming more and more distant, until I couldn't see it anymore. I wished he killed me instead of her, because the pain I felt at that moment felt like my soul was sucked away, part of it left by her side. That moment replayed in my head over and over, as we drove off in one of the cars. I was screaming and crying that he'd let me go see my baby one last time, but he didn't oblige.
My poor baby, I love you so much, and I wish that someday you could forgive me for birthing you from a father like him 🤍
