"Doctor Meera, I had no stomach bug last night. Thank you," little patient Kyra remarked during my visit to the children's ward.
"You are a very good girl, Kyra, which is why the fairy bestowed upon you a strong stomach. Now you're all ready to go home and watch your favourite movie and eat healthy food," I said with the same smile I had for everyone.
It was eleven o'clock when I concluded my round, and remembered that I had skipped breakfast. I occasionally starve myself to death when there is so much work to be done. I started working at this hospital two months back and my morning schedule is busy. It is the best hospital in the country, and I'm pleased to have a position here.
I walked over to the cafeteria to get something to eat. I'm an introvert by nature, I've always been a bookworm; when I'm not studying, I'd read a book, and people don't find my company appealing. I observed Some doctors were sitting sipping on their beverages or chatting in Cafeteria.
"Dr. Meera Jaiswal," someone says, and I turn to face them. She, like me, is the new doctor. We work together and she is the polar opposite of me.
"Yes, Hina," I respond.
"I need a favour from you; I have a wedding to attend and need to leave early; could you do my duty just two hours after you finish? It's urgent," she says, and I merely nod. I'm a sucker for assisting people and can't say no.
"Thank you, Dr. Meera," she says as she walks away, then sits with her group, conversing and laughing. My phone begins to ring, and Chachi's name appears on my screen. I answer the phone. "We're going out, Meera. We'll be late, you have dinner and sleep," she says.
"Yes, Chachi," I say, and she hangs up. I reside with my Chacha, Chachi, and Divya, their daughter. We don't have much affection for each other; I live with them as a guest, they don't include me in their family matters or plans, and I'm left alone to sort out my affairs. It's not that they treat me poorly or make me do all of the housework; it's simply that they don't treat me like a family member. Who can blame them?
I know nothing about my parents besides what I've learned through my Chachi. My mother came from a famous doctor family and fell in love with my father, who was only studying medicine then. They got along well and fell in love. When my grandparents found out, they forced my parents, demanding that they separate. But my parents were so much in love that they eloped and began their lives together.
For over three years, they had a beautiful married life. They both finished their studies and began working as doctors in a reputable hospital. My mother then gave birth to me. Chachi always said my mother knew it was a girl and that I was the most wondrous thing ever happened to either of them. During those years, my parents were the happiest. But sadly, my birth caused issues for my mother, and she died while my father and I were subjected to all of my grandparents' scorn and loathing.
When my grandparents found out, they blamed me and my father for killing their only daughter. They had a contact at the hospital where my father worked, and they banned him from all hospitals. After a few months, the bills began to pile up, and Dad found it impossible to pay even the rent. My father had lost all of his savings when I was six months old, and he couldn't bear the thought of his only daughter struggling. My father begged my grandparents for my safety, but they were harsh; they were willing to take me only on one condition that he forgot he had a daughter.
Chachi told me how much my father suffered over those months, trying to find a solution and make things work for me, but my grandparents were hell set on ruining our lies. Finally, he succumbed to their situation and left me with my grandparents to ensure I had a good life ahead of me. Chacha and Chachi have no idea where my father is now.
