I couldn't believe it; today I was officially turning seventeen. Charlie and Sam said they had a huge surprise waiting for me. I was so excited that I rushed out of my room in search of my younger brother, Zayden.

"Zayden, where are you?" I called out from the kitchen. "I'm in the living room." "Zayden, guess what?" I stated this while rushing towards the living room. "What?" Zayden asked while cutting off the TV. "I'm seventeen, woohoo! So, what are you going to do for my birthday?" "You'll find out soon enough." "You're killing me, Smalls."

"Kara, leave your brother alone and go shopping with Charlie and Sam." My mother stated this while she walked into the living room. "Are they here?" I asked. "Yep, and we want your butt out of this house so we can plan." "Alright, bye, family, and remember, I love red velvet cake." I said this while smiling. Maybe they would get the hint. "LEAVEE." Zayden yelled. "Alright, alright. See you guys soon."

My family meant the world to me. Zayden was a year younger than me but had more fire in him than anyone I ever knew, at least when it came to me. Zayden had short, spikey hair and dark green eyes. It's funny how we both have green eyes, but his was so much darker than mine. My mother, Patrice, had brown eyes with short black hair. I guess I didn't inherit her genes since my hair is brown with highlights. I mostly took after my father, Henry. A stubborn old man with dark green eyes and brown hair.

When I walked outside, I noticed my two best friends in front of a red Porsche. Growing up, it's been difficult to make good, loyal friends since I come from a wealthy family. I'm not rich, but I'm definitely not poor. My father is a lawyer, and my mother is a doctor, so money isn't really a problem for me. Sam is the same age as me and has lived a tough life, but not as tough as Charlie. An eighteen-year-old girl who gave her life to drugs and alcohol to dissolve childhood pain. She claims that if it wasn't for me, she wouldn't have made it in life, but the truth is, I just told her, "I love her." She decided to stay after that.

Sam has a huge heart, always trying to help others, and his bright brown eyes sparkle when he smiles. He has blonde hair and a nose piercing.

Charlie has the bluest eyes I've ever seen. Her hair is really pretty too, a nice thick shade of black with everlasting twirls.

"Are you just going to stare at us, or are you going to get your butt in the vehicle?" Charlie yelled out. "I'm coming." I hopped into the backseat of Sam's vehicle and rolled my windows down as he cranked up the car and drove off.

"Are you ready for your birthday surprise?" Sam asked. "Yes, please don't let it be like last year, where I somehow ended up in a lion pit." "Listen, we apologized a thousand times for that innocent. Who would have thought cub feeding was a term for lion feeding?" "What was it supposed to be a term for?" "Badgers" "Yeah, how about we avoid animal feeding in general?" I stated. "Don't worry, Kara, this year is different." Charlie stated.

Pretty soon, we arrived at an indoor skydiving arena. "What are we doing here?" I asked. "This is your surprise. I know you mentioned you always wanted to go skydiving, so this is the best we could do. Two hours of indoor skydiving." Sam stated. I was in shock. "Guys, this is the best present ever." "Come on, we have to check in." Sam Stated. When we walked in, the first thing I noticed was people getting hardness up and floating in the air. I noticed a mini smoothie bar in the corner and a first aid kit hooked up to the wall. This place was beyond amazing.

Charlie, Sam, and I walked over to the front desk to check in. "Hello, how may I help you?" The man at the desk asked. I looked down at his nametag, which was labeled Zack. "Hello, Zack; we made an appointment for Kara Smalls." Charlie stated. "Yes, we have you right here. Go ahead and take off your socks, shoes, and all of your personal belongings and place them in locker 239, then grab a hardness and someone will help you guys put it on, then you can have fun." Zack stated. "Thank you." Charlie grabbed the key for locker 239, and soon we were all heading towards the locker. "This is amazing, guys. Thank you." "Come on, let's have some fun." Sam stated while taking off barefoot to find a hardness. Charlie and I busted out laughing. "Come on, Kara, let's go have fun."

After getting hardness up, we begin to enjoy our time floating in the air. It was such an experience. I never knew how much fun skydiving was; sure, it wasn't the real thing, but the fact I got to experience a little bit meant a lot. After hanging out at the indoor skydiving arena, it was soon time to head back to the house for my birthday party.

"I hope your birthday is going great, Kara." Charlie stated. "It is. Thank you both." "Well, it's not over yet." I looked out my car window and saw my house lit up with lights and filled with cars everywhere. Charlie, Sam, and I got out of the vehicle and walked inside, where I was soon splashed with confetti by my father. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KARA!" The whole house shouted.

"Guys, did you do this?" I asked my parents. "Well, we definitely didn't throw a party for the fun of it. Happy birthday, baby girl." "Thanks dad." "Well, what are you waiting for? LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!" Charlie yelled out. I had a pretty amazing family, I thought. "Come on, Kara, the dance floor isn't going to dance itself." Sam stated as he drugged me to the dance floor.

After dancing for a while, I noticed Zayden in the living room, grabbing another cupcake. "Zayden. This is amazing. I love you so much." I said as I made my way towards him to give him the biggest hug ever. "I'm glad you enjoy it." "I'm going to the restroom. I'll be back." I stated "Hurry up; we're going to cut your cake soon." "Alright."

Once I made my way through the heavy crowd for the bathroom, I got a phone call from my cousin. Probably to wish me a happy birthday. I needed to escape from people, so I headed towards the front yard to answer the call.

"Hello" "Kara, Happy birthday, love." "Thanks Jill. Hey, I will have to call you back. Mom and dad threw a party, and I can barely hear you." "That's fine. I love you." "I love you too."

As I hung up on Jill, my plan was to head back inside, but I saw a little girl down the road with blood all over her. I slid my phone into my back pocket and proceeded to walk towards the girl, who couldn't have been five or six.

"Are you okay?" I asked cautiously. "Help." Her words were a whisper, but I could tell she was afraid. Pretty soon, a black van came towards us at full speed, and five men with masks hoped out, surrounding the little girl and me. I was trapped. Before I could say anything, one of the guys pulled out a gun and pointed it at us. "Get in the van." "Please take me. Leave the little girl alone." "Get it or die." I took a deep breath before hopping in the back of the van with my arms around the girl, protecting her. So much for an amazing birthday.
