Devlin, a sixteen-year-old male, who lived on the streets of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma was walking down a sidewalk near the highway listening to the rush-hour traffic. His clothes ripped and torn dirt stained his face. He is a thin boy, five feet ten inches tall, with dirty blond hair and gray eyes. As he looked twenty, no one ever asked about his life seeing him as a non-working man. He was adopted by a foster home at fourteen. His foster parents were decent, hard-working people who worked a lot but also did their best to home-school him from his knowledge. They told him he would get bullied if others knew he was an orphan.

Right before his sixteenth birthday his home mysteriously burned down. Feeling that he would be blamed for it he quickly ran away. Not knowing that his foster parents took a policy out on the house and as foster parents, if they said he lit the fire they would get the money. Because he ran away it made it a lot easier for them to pin it on him. This happened in Wichita Texas. Devlin was good at running and was able to cross into Oklahoma within twelve hours even after stopping at gas stations to ask for water. After crossing state lines, he just started walking till he reached OKC.

As Devlin is walking, he sees an on-cue gas station off NW tenth street his pace picks up heading towards it. After not eating in about 3 days, he gets light-headed while crossing the street stopping in the middle, a semi headed right toward him not even seeing the boy in front of him. A hand grabs his arm pulling him hard out of the way. From the force he was thrown to the ground, a big well-built man walked over to him. "Why the hell are you trying to die?" Devlin looked up at the man as he was trying to focus hard. "I...I Didn't mean...." "Mean to what?!?" The man interrupted, "Why in the world would you stop in front of a semi if you didn't have a death wish." His voice is annoyed at Devlin who looks back in silence.

The man looked at Devlin a little more, noticing ripped and torn clothing. "Kid, when did you eat last?" Devlin said, looking up at the man. "I haven't eaten in days, Sir." He said, trying to be polite. "Sir? I don't get called that often, kid, my name is Ed." He holds his hand up to Devlin and nods toward the gas station. "Let's get you some food kid." He said feeling bad for tossing the kid on the ground. He helped Devlin up and they slowly walked inside making sure he didn't pass out from malnourishment. Dev wanted to tell Ed his name but as he looked to the side there was a news article with a mention of a house burning down in Texas on the front cover. "What's your name kid?" He asks. Devlin looks at Ed and softly says "I go by Lin" he says not having enough time to figure out a new name. "Well, kid, get what you want, it'll be on me." The cashier looked at the 2 guys that walked in seeing one look rough. The cashier was keeping his eyes on Devlin when Devlin noticed him and got uncomfortable. "It's fine just go grab some food and ignore the stares."

Devlin moved quickly grabbing three hotdogs and loading them up then grabbed two, liter Dr. Pepper then headed back to Ed. "That is Lin? That isn't much." Devlin nodded at Ed's question. They both walked up to the register. The cashier looked at Devlin with a slight,  You not going to be able to afford this look. Ed gave a look at the cashier silently saying to ring it up before I ring your bell. Feeling a little intimidated he started scanning the Dr.Peppers. They left after Ed paid for it. After exiting Ed looked around and saw a bench heading for it Devlin following close behind. After sitting Devlin handed a hotdog and one drink to Ed. "I dislike eating alone" Ed took the food and drink nodding. They both started to dig in and eat.

After finishing up eating Ed stood without a word and looked at Lin. "You have a kind heart, Devlin. Just a rough road that you have been given. Let's change that." Devin looked shocked trying to figure out how Ed knew his real name. Before Delvin could run Ed snapped his fingers and the surrounding area turned completely white and the only two there were them. "Let us give you a better life this time," Ed smiles softly.
