I placed down a clear glass vase full of pristine yellow roses on the last table there was to set up, before I just stand there for a moment and admire all of my hard work, taking in every detail, thinking of all the late nights I spent making sure everything was perfect, all the times I rearranged the furniture so it looked as good as possible, feeling a sense of accomplishment fall over me like crystal water on the rocks of a river, a feeling telling me it wasn't all for nothing, a feeling that brought me peace after such a chaotic time.
The last couple of years have been some of the longest and hardest due to the stress of leaving my parents, after finally finding the strength to leave my abusive dad and only hope for the best about my mum, after all she was in love with that "man" so I know she wouldn't leave him, I left with basically noting and having no one to go to for support and comfort, having to work two jobs so i had just enough money to pay the bills, never mind feed myself and my two cats who I wouldn't trade for the world after they have been with me through everything , but now all that work has payed of, all the tears where worth it and I have finally achieved my goal.
Opening my own bakery, ivory's bakes. Yes, I know it's a lame basic name, But at the time it was a good idea in my naive 19 year old brain. After all, it is named after the one and only ivory blackwell, me.
I look around to make sure everything is up to standard. All that's left is to flip the sign that hung on the door gently swaying every now and then to the side that said open. As I walked over to the door, my breath wobbling with excitement and fear , a sudden wave of panic rushed over me. What happens if nobody comes in? What happens if nobody likes it?
No. I have worked so hard I must go on. I flip the sight and run behind the counter accidentally tripping over my feet hoping no one seen. A couple minutes pass, and I am awoken abruptly from my daydream by the sound of the door swinging open and the bell on top of it chiming.
A tall, dark-haired woman walks in, she can't be older than 25 and her dark locks flow like a river behind her as she calmly walks in.
"Good morning. What can I get for you today!" I say, forcing the words out of my mouth out of panic.
"Just a coffee, please." She replies smiling a smile sweeter than any cake in this shop, instantly calming my nerves.
"Oh, ok! That's £3.50 feel free to take a seat wherever!" I smile back, trying to sound confident, which I'm definitely not.
"Thanks." She smiles the same smile at me making my stomach basically backflip.
The lady sat over at the table with the yellow roses I set up earlier. She was on her laptop. Probably working due to the focused look on her face as she clicked the keys.
I make coffee as quick as possible and bring it to her table, trying not to spill a drop as the result of my unsteady hand.
"Here's your coffee!" I say trying to copy that same sugar sweet smile her face displayed earlier
"Thanks, I know this is an odd question but, have you just opened?" She replied momentarily shifting her gaze from her laptop to my eyes
"Yes, you're actually my first customer! How come you asked?" I responded in a puzzled tone
"I haven't seen this place before. It's quite a relaxing place to work. not going to lie,It's cute.. did you do it all yourself?"
I felt a rush of heat cover my face as my cheeks reddened.
"Thanks! I did do it all myself actually! Although it took quite the wile.."
My avert my eyes from hers and to her laptop covered head to toe in stickers all overlapping one another.
"You also seem quite busy with your job, if you don't mind me asking, what do you work as?" I added on.
She froze and I swere the room went cold as that smile she once showed now presented something more of a straight line. She looked as if she had seen a loaf of bread fly across the room.
"Oh, um.. I have got to go! Um, sorry.." she stuttered, grabbing her things in a hurry, and her cup of coffee that I had thankfully put in a take away cup.
"No, it's fine. I hope to see you again soon!"
I smiled and watched her leave. What was that about? Did I say something wrong? I've only just opened and I have already upset a customer. I was snapped out of my thoughts by the door once again. I quickly ran behind the counter and served them as quickly and calmly as I could after such an interaction.
The end of the day came, and I started to shut the bakery. I boxed some of the cookies and cupcakes for my consumption, and the rest got boxed for my lunch and snack due to not being able to serve them since they are not fresh anymore and could be seen as a health and safety hazard.
BANG BANG BANG
"I LEFT MY KEYS PLEASE LET ME IN." A familiar voice cried out from behind the door
it was the tall, dark-haird lady from earlier. I walked over and unlocked the door to see what the shouting woman so desperately needed to be let in for, because I knew it wasn't for another cup of coffee . All of a sudden, she bursts in, knocking me off my feet and to the ground.
"OW!" I yelp in pain
"Thank god they are still here!" She sighed, smiling in relief.
"Are you not going to apologise for knocking me over?" I angrily snapped.
She looked at me and then realised she had indeed pushed me to the ground over what seemed to be a set of keys.
"Oh my, I'm so sorry." She exclaimed, her face changing from relief to a more concerned expression.
She held out her hand to help me, and I took it, her slim fingers grasped tightly around mine sending a spark through my whole body, finally I got back to my feet and then grabbed a box.
"Even though you have just rudely pushed me to the ground, would you like some cupcakes, I'm closing, and I can't sell them tomorrow since they aren't fresh, and I definitely can't eat them all before they go stale" I say
"Free food? Hell yes, I would love to take them!" She shouts, as if she hasn't ate anything in years.
I laughed and handed her the box.
"I'm ivory, by the way."
"You have a pretty name. It suits you. I'm Antoinette nice to meet you, Again." She laughed showing her perfect white teeth.
I felt my face getting hot, and I was definitely bright red.
"I need to close the bakery now. You should leave" I mumbled trying to destruct from my flustered cheeks.
"Oh yeah sorry, Have a nice night. " she smiled
"You too!" I shouted as she left
I smiled and shut the door. All I have to do is sweep the floor and a couple of other things, and then I'm ready to go home to my cats, luna, and millie.
I finish cleaning and lock the door to the bakery before heading home.*13001 words*
