I start walking up to the bakery. All I can smell is the dampness of the rain, and it brings some sort of comfort. I have always loved the rain. The smell. The sound. Everything about it is just so calming.
I eventually arrive at the cafe. I open the door and immediately run to the kitchen, trying not to fall over my feet again, to start baking. I managed to bake about 3 dozen cupcakes, cookies, and some other goods like cakes and macaroons by the time i was set to open.
I displayed them in a little glass case on the front desk that was decorated around the edges with fake flowers and leaves to give a sort of over grown look. I change the sign to open, and almost immediately, someone rushes in.
Once again, it's Antoinette but this time soaked in rain."It's poring down out there."I said apon seeing her soaked in rain
"No shit."She snapped back at me, looking as if she'd rather be asleep right now. to be honest, I would, too.
"What can I get for you today?" I said, trying to smile, but I don't know whether it worked.
"Just a coffee, please." She answered with a slight smile, but still an obvious look of annoyance on her face, Before handing me the £3.50 and walked over to the same table as yesterday. The one with the yellow roses.
I finish making her coffee, and I bring it over to her.
"Here's your coffee!...did you wait outside for the bakery to open or something? You are soaking, and you came in the moment we opened. " I said in a joking way. It wouldn't surprise me if she did with how drenched she was.
"Uh...I....maybe...? Your coffee's are amazing, and the food smells lovely, also it's a good place to work.." she mumbled as her hair dripped crystal like drops.
"Oh" I laughed, seeing a slight embarrassed smile grow across her face.
She was now a light shade of red. It was sort of funny. She waited in the pouring rain so she could come into my bakery and work."Well, enjoy! And don't forget anything on your way out this time!" I smiled at her
"Thanks, I wount!" She spoke back smiling that sugar coated smile from yesterday.
I walked back to the counter and served some more people. Soon enough, it was time to close. Everyone left about 10 minutes ago, so that makes my job well easier, not having to kick anyone out.
After boxing everything up and tidying around, I finally locked the door. I put my airpods in and pressed shuffle on my playlist. 'Cherry wine' by Hozier starts playing.
Eventually, I get home, and I'm greeted by my cats, luna, and millie, meowing and rubbing themselves against my legs. They are little black cats, and the only way I can tell them apart is by the collar. Luna has a black one, and millie has a white one.
I pour some food into their bowls and watched them hurry to their dinner as they heard the metal clang and the rustles of the food packaging, to make sure they eat before making instant noodles for myself, after, I lay on the couch and watch holyoaks on the tv while eating slowly, due to being too distracted to realise I have to finish the food. The episode comes to a finish, and tip the rest of my noodles in the bin and put my bowl in the sink.
Millie comes up to me and head buts my leg. That's her way of saying she needs attention. I stroke her head. Eventually, I decided to go on a walk. On my own. At 8.30 in the night. In the forest behind my house. Yes, it's a weird and stupid idea, but I'm a strong woman. If anyone touches me, I'll hit them in the head with a baguette.
I put on my long black rain coat and boots, and I walk out of my house to see it's raining again, but I don't mind, rain is one of my favourite things. I make sure to lock the door behind me.
It was still slightly bright outside. The sky was a grey colour matching the rain filled clouds. I start walking down a mud trail going into the forest. The sounds of the birds and the rain calms me down, Making me forget about the stress of making everything for the bakery in the morning.
I continued walking down the path, and a squirrel ran past me with a couple of what seemed to be peanuts in its mouth. As soon as it sees me, it runs up a tree nearby. I continue walking, and as I walk, I notice the path gets slippery, and there is an unsafe amount of tree roots sticking out, so I must be careful.
I start walking, and I hear my phone buzz. I quickly got it out of my pocket and checked what it was. My old friend zach had mesaged me.
"I seen your parents today" the message read
Zach was one of the only people I stayed in contact with, although we didn't speak much, we'd call every now and then to check up on each other.
I feel tears start to fill my eyes, and my vision gets blurry.
"Did they say anything.?" I type back holding in tears.
As much as I miss my parents, they were abusive alcoholics and I never want to speak to them again. They treated me like shit. I have worked so hard that there is no way I'm going back. All of a sudden, I feel myself slip over a tree root and end up flying down a little slope.
CRASH
"OW WATCH WHERE YOUR GOING" i heard a angry female voice shout.
I opened my eyes to see what had happened, and not only did I fall into a little pond down at the bottom of the slope, I knocked someone in with me
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry. Are you ok??" I asked, still in shock from the fall.
"My books are all rui- ivory?" I heard a confused voice mumble.
"Antoinette??"
