Isamaila's pov:
BEEP! BEEP!
I groaned as I woke up, sitting up slowly and rubbing my eyes. The morning light filtered through the curtains, signaling the start of another day. I swung my legs over the edge of the bed and stood, stretching out the stiffness. With nothing major planned for the day except calling Robinson about his proposal, my mind lingered on the dilemma. On one hand, the pay and benefits were enticing. On the other hand, the thought of working with a dangerous inmate had my nerves on edge. It was a tough predicament, a balancing act between opportunity and risk.
I made my way to the bathroom, turning on the water. The steady sound of the shower helped me clear my thoughts as I brushed my teeth, scrubbed away the remnants of sleep, and allowed the warm water to soothe my tension. After drying off, I slipped into some comfortable clothes, ready to tackle whatever the day had in store for me. I headed downstairs and made my way to the kitchen. Deciding to keep it simple, I reached for some eggs and bacon—nothing too elaborate for the morning. The sound of bacon sizzling in the pan and the rhythmic whisking of eggs felt oddly soothing.
Within moments, the kitchen was filled with the comforting aroma of breakfast. I plated my scrambled eggs and crispy bacon, grabbed a glass of orange juice, and poured myself a generous serving. With my plate and drink in hand, I settled onto the sofa, flipping through channels until I found a movie to watch. As I took bites of my breakfast, my gaze drifted to my purse. I reached over, pulled out my phone, and fished out the card Robinson had given me. Staring at his number, I hesitated briefly before dialing it into my phone.
"There's no turning back now," I muttered to myself as I pressed the call button. The phone rang, and my heart raced slightly with anticipation. "Hello?" Robinson answered. "Hello, Robinson. This is Isamaila," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "Good morning, Isamaila. How are you?" Robinson replied. "I'm doing well; how about you?" I asked. "I'm good. Have you given any more thought to the proposal from last night? What are your thoughts?" Robinson asked.
"Yes, I've thought about it, and I've decided that I am willing to work as a psychiatrist for the inmate you told me about," I said. "I'm glad you accepted. Would you like to visit him and the facility today? It'll give you a better idea of how he is and what the place looks like," Robinson suggested. "You mentioned the place is isolated. How far is it?" I asked. "About 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic," Robinson said. "I get my own transportation, right?" I asked.
"Yes," Robinson confirmed. I nodded. "Alright, well, when you can, pick me up," I said. "Send me your address," Robinson replied. "I'll text it to you," I said, quickly tapping the message into my phone. "Alright, see you then, and thank you," Robinson said before hanging up. I texted him my address and set my phone down, staring at the screen. "God, this is actually happening," I murmured as I rubbed my eyes.
DING! DING!
I looked at my phone again and saw a text message from Idalia. I picked it up and read her message. "Good morning, Isa. How did you sleep?" I quickly began to reply. "I slept like hell, what about you?" After sending the message, I got up and went upstairs. I had forgotten I left my charger in my drawer. I grabbed it and headed back downstairs, sitting back down in my spot.
DING!
Another notification from Idalia popped up. "Damn, I hope everything gets better for you. Did you think about the proposal?" I quickly typed a response. "I did. It's better for me to explain on call than in our text message. When you have the chance, call me and I'll explain." "I'm at work right now. When I get on break, I'll call!" Idalia replied. Before I could respond, a text from Robinson came through.
