Isamaila's pov:
I walked inside as soon as he left. Robinson informed me that my car should be ready tomorrow and in my driveway. I turned on the lights, removed my heel, and went to the kitchen. "$80 wasted just for you to snap off like a twig," I muttered as I tossed my heels into the trashcan. I leaned over the counter to look at my foot. It was red, and some of the skin was gone. "Fuck," I murmured as I exited the kitchen and went upstairs. I turned on the hallway and bathroom lights. I wanted to take a long, hot, soothing shower. I needed it, but so did my foot.
I went into my room and switched on the lights. My room was a mess because I didn't have time to clean it before leaving for work. I didn't want to be late because I was reorganizing my room anyway. "I'll do this shit after I shower," I muttered as I went to my closet and took out my pajamas, underwear, and slippers. I switched on the TV and went to Netflix. I decided to delay one of my favorite drama episodes until I finished showering.
I went to the bathroom and turned on the warm water. I took out my toothbrush and toothpaste. After taking off my clothes, I stepped into the shower. I brushed my teeth twice, cleansed myself with my favorite soap twice, and then rinsed my hair. I was in the bathroom for more than 40 minutes, which isn't too bad. I reached inside my closet for some ointment and rubbed it on my foot after dabbing some on my finger. Then, I changed into my slippers and returned to my room. After drying off and doing my skincare and hair, I organized my room and moved things around. It took about 15 minutes. Finally, I laid down on my bed and started watching my favorite show.
DING! DING! DING!
"Ugh," I grumbled as I paused the TV, grabbed my wardrobe, and slipped on my slippers. I went downstairs to see if anyone was there. Idalia. "Idalia, you better have a good reason for disturbing my peace," I remarked, opening the door and crossing my arms. "I brought a large box of pizza with your preferred toppings, a large jug of orange juice, small fries, and cookies!" Idalia giggled as she walked inside.
"I've just finished brushing my teeth," I explained. "Well, after you finish eating, brush them again. I told you I'd stop by later," Idalia said as she went upstairs with the items. "Don't do anything just yet! I'm going to go get some napkins, plates, and cups!" I yelled as I ran to the kitchen to grab them. I went upstairs to my room with the items and noticed Idalia sorting everything. I set the items down and helped her with the pizza, juice, and fries.
"Help yourself. I'm sure you're hungry," Idalia said as she took a seat on my bed. I grabbed two pieces and started munching on them quickly. "Don't give yourself a stomachache now; there's plenty to eat here," Idalia joked. "I haven't eaten anything since Starbucks," I said between bites. "Talk to me; what happened after you left?" Idalia asked.
"Well, I assumed everything would be good. I exited the area and began driving home. I thought I'd be at peace, but I wasn't. When my car broke down, drivers behind me honked. This was the second time today that I was embarrassed. My foot then began to hurt. I had to hitchhike but no one helped me. The police then arrived. Thankfully, I wasn't detained or punished, but they're going to work on my car, and it should be finished by tomorrow," I explained.
"So, who took you back here?" Idalia asked. "A chief of police named Robinson," I explained. "Woah," Idalia said. "However, that wasn't all. He made a proposal to me," I added. "What exactly did he propose?" Idalia asked, her brows raising with curiosity. "He suggested that I work for them and 'tame' this one inmate," I explained. "Oh?" Idalia leaned in, intrigued. "Yeah, but I'm only considering it after he told me the inmate murdered three therapists who tried to console him with no security," I said, my voice tinged with disbelief.
"Wow," Idalia said, shaking her head in disbelief. "I'm not putting my life in danger," I stated firmly. "Well, did he tell you about the benefits?" Idalia asked, tilting her head. "He told me I'd make a lot of money, plus transportation to wherever the place is and security guards," I explained. "Even though that is a risky job, the benefits appear to be far superior to the job you previously had. I mean, your own transportation?" Idalia said, raising an eyebrow. "Yeah, the benefits seem really good. But what about the part where I could get murdered?" I said, crossing my arms.
"Well," Idalia began thoughtfully, "I say you go see where that place is and explore. Maybe meet the inmate with the police present." I hesitated for a moment. "You think I should actually consider it?" "At least check it out. You don't have to commit, but it wouldn't hurt to see if it's something you can handle or absolutely walk away from," Idalia reasoned. I sighed, leaning back against the bed. "I don't know. It feels like such a gamble."
"Just don't make any decisions until you're sure," Idalia saidI took a deep breath. "I don't know, Idalia," I mumbled. "If it makes you feel any better, I can stay on the phone with you while you're there," Idalia said. I rolled my eyes. "I'll think about it," I said. "Good. I never want to see you broke and homeless. Besides, working for a psychotic convict is a badass job. You'll make your old boss jealous," Idalia grinned.
"How?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "For losing one of the toughest psychiatrists yet!" Idalia said, throwing her hands up dramatically. I chuckled, shaking my head. "You make it sound like I'm about to wrestle a tiger for a living." "Honestly, it might be less dangerous than what Robinson is suggesting," Idalia teased with a wink. I chuckled as we both got up to clean. Once we finished eating, I headed to the bathroom to brush my teeth again, leaving Idalia to sanitize my room. The sound of her humming as she tidied up brought a small smile to my face.
When I returned, everything looked spotless. "Thank you so much for this, Idalia," I said warmly, wrapping her in a tight hug. "Anything for my best girl," she said with a grin, hugging me back. "Besides, I couldn't leave you in this mess, especially after the day you've had." "Drive safely home," I advised, walking her to the door. "I will," Idalia assured me, grabbing her bag. She paused before stepping out. "And remember to think about it. Do you know how you can reach him?"
"Yeah, he gave me his card," I said, pulling it out of my purse to show her briefly. "Good. Just don't overthink it, okay? Sleep on it and decide what's best for you," she said with a gentle smile. "Thanks, Ida. Be safe," I said as she waved and headed down the driveway. I shut the door behind me, making sure it was locked before heading downstairs to turn out the lights. The house felt quiet and still as I moved back upstairs, turning off the hallway and bathroom lights on my way.
The lingering scent of pizza still hung in the air, so I grabbed a bottle of spray and gave my room a few spritzes to freshen it up. Settling onto my bed, I glanced at my nightstand. Robinson's card was sitting there, catching my attention. I picked it up, running my fingers over the text, and let out a deep sigh. "New beginnings begin tomorrow," I thought, placing the card back on the nightstand. With that, I switched off the TV, tucked myself under the blankets, and let sleep take over.
