Tap tap tap.
I hear it again.
Tap tap tap.
The weird sounds from the attic.
Mother and Father told me to never open the attic. Every night I hear it.
Tap tap tap.
Tonight was no different. The tapping continues.
Tap tap tap.
The sound feels my ears. It makes me feel like going up there to see what the sound is.
Tap tap...
I listen closely. Waiting for the next tap. Only two? That's new.
Whisper.
That's new. It is never whispered before. I listen closely to see if I can hear what it is saying.
Let me out, child.
The words sink into my skin. I get out of my bed. But, I can't help it. My body is moving on it own. My head is dizzy. I slow walk to the attic and pull the rope to let down the stairs. The stair come flying down and I use them to climb up. I shout and cover my mouth. I see children hanging from ropes. There is an empty rope in the middle.
Come and join us, child.
They call to me. I step closer. No. I want to go back down. I step closer. Why can't I stop walking? I step closer and now the rope is right above me. I slowly step on the stool and grab the rope. I place it around my neck and step off the stool. My body doesn't even struggle. I am with them now. With my siblings that my parents never let me meet.
