In the year of our mother, 860, the land Valisthea saw a new sun rising over the plains. It was full a brilliant, it's light shining amongst the four mother crystals that towered over each country. The neighboring kingdoms of Rosaria, Sanbreque, Waloed, the Dhalmekian Republic, the Iron Kingdom and the Crystalline Dominion. But of all these kingdoms, Rosaria was the capitol of it all.
In Rosalith, a special day was spread throughout the land. People of high and low estate were coming to the capitol to see the christening of a new duke. Those from the islands came on boats through the cascading waters. Others flew via airship. Those poorer had to walk through the morning mist or travelled by chocobo. Birds were flying to Rosaria on their business. But as anyone was concerned, this was no ordinary christening, this occasion was to see if the new duke would be blessed by the sacred Phoenix.
The Phoenix was an Eikon of Fire that only chose a human of noble birth. Whoever was blessed by the Phoenix would become Archduke of Rosaria and a great protector to her people. When Elwin Rosfield, the Archduke of Rosaria and his wife Anabella were blessed with their first child Clive, who was now five years old, they were surprised that the Phoenix didn't chose him. Anabella took this as a great burden, but Elwin and his brother Byron loved him just as any other child. In fact Elwin was a beloved ruler compared to his wife, who thought she was goddess who didn't have to answer to mortals. Perhaps, she was a spoiled bitch who thought the world catered to her needs.
But when their second son, whom they named Joshua came into the world, she expected happiness. She could only wait with silent breaths until the spirit of the Phoenix would arrive.
It came sooner than expected in a glitter of fiery light. The Phoenix looked at Joshua, sleeping peacefully in a cradle fashioned of gold and jewels. It shook for a spit, then circled around the baby, going faster and faster, stopping abruptly and phasing into the boy's body.
At twelve-eighteen at noon, Elwin himself delivered a simple message:
"The Phoenix has chosen Joshua!"
The nobles bowed grandly before the chosen one. The servants did so as well and even the next-to-littlest of them all, Clive himself.
