Would You Believe

I feel the bed shift a while later. There's a soft light that shines in from the small window port hole on the far wall. As I open my eyes I see his figure sitting on the edge of the bed stripping himself of his sharp tools and weapons placing them not so quietly on the bedside table.

"Would you believe me if I say that I won't hurt you?" I watch his form jump just a little at the sound of my voice that disturbed the silent room.

" Never." He grumbles before climbing onto the bed lying beside me.

"If you tole me that you'd never hurt me, I'd believe you." I run my hand down his face and pull the covers up to invite him in. i remember the look he gave me just a few hours before, the one where he looked as if he were in love.

" Then you're a fool. " He wraps his arm around me before pulling the thick blanket tightly around us. " You should trust anyone but yourself. Even a god would lie to protect his own skin and kill for his own benefit." He hums this no more causally than a passing word between friends.

We continue to whisper amongst ourselves in the dark, wrapped in warmth as the ship passes a winter island.

" I've never seen snow before. " I admit as i watch the small specks of snow that fall into the sea outside. I can feel his fingers drumming against my thigh, I can feel his eyes watching me.

" I lived on that island all my life. My mother was a whore, a really good one too besides the fact that she had too many kids to count. I'd seen her on her good days and on her bad. I'd been beaten and praised and sold too many times to count. All I  know of the world is the ugly and I know that the more a man claims that he is good, he's 10 times worst than you'd. So many people, sailors, marines, pirates they're all the same. No one is better or worst, but I'd rather trust the ones that don't hide the bad and ugly. " He's closed his eyes while I spoke.

"So my love, what I'm trying to say is, I trust you more than I would trust a god or a saint. That being said, I really would believe you if you told me you wouldn't hurt me and if you do, even if you decide to kill me, I'll die with an ignorant smile on my face." There's that look again, the one where he smiles as if he's in love.

" There'll be snow on the deck tomorrow. I'll take you out there before the boys sweep it up." i can't hemp but smile at his statement and and wrap my arms around him as much as i can. he gives me a puzzled look.

" What?" I smile into his chest and breath in his scent, a scent of gunpower, iron and salt.

" It's just cold." He seems to believe my lie as he pull se closer as if swallowing me up whole.

" We grew up in the south blue. Our island didn't have a name and the marines didn't have a say in how our island was run. A lawless island it was always cold there but it never snowed. "

I can only assume he means that he and the other 3 is what he means by we. He didn't say anymore but I  knew that it meant a lot for him to share even a small bit of his past with me. As if he trusts me.

" How much is my dream worth Lyrah, tell me." he suddenly asks and I can see the slight glow of our connection, our string of fate.

" It's worth more than any life of this ship,  even yours." The quiet engulfs us as the red shine from my devil fruit slowly fades. I feel the drumming of a heart beat that doesn't belong to me.

" I believe you."

I'll never know which he believes in, the worth of his dream or the fact that I would never hurt him but all i knew if that they were both fact.
