THIS IS AN INCOMPLETE ONESHOT. IM JUST TESTING THE WATERS OF MY WRITING TO SEE IF I LIKE THIS STYLE OR IF I WANNA DO SOMETHING ELSE.
Elliott "Mirage" Rodger Witt, the most insufferable Legend out of the entire accumulated roster.
Atleast, thats what you say. What started out a simple gig working as maitenence for the various tech the Apex Games used slowly turned into maitenence on the legends' tech. You werent allowed near Revenant, Pathfinder, or more recently Ash, but everyone else you helped with. Save for Crypto. The legend you worked with most was Mirage, as Holotech had been one of your major interests for years. Its use during the Frontier War and how it worked now was just so damn interesting!
Elliott was a pain in the ass the first couple months. He talked a lot, made way too many dad jokes, and overall you just werent a social guy. Posterchild introvert is what your mom always said. Social anxiety and struggles with self image are straight bitches to deal with.
Over time, that ended up changing. Soon enough his jokes felt funnier and his wit (no pun intended) had started taking effect on you. Before you knew it, you two were comfortable within the title of friends. You kept up your display of not liking him though, just to mess with him. It was all fun and games now you both knew that.
Well, everything was fun and games. Then, his mindless flirting that he did with almost everyone during matches and with you in private started eliciting thoughts and feelings that you had deemed unnecessary for a long time. Being single this long was at first just a silly little character trait. Not to mention the respective issue of never really getting close enough with someone to even consider the possibility of romance. Then it started affecting you. Your self image. Did you really deserve love? You ignored these feelings in favor of getting paid and staying professional.
You told yourself that you did stay professional. And mybe that one day, someone would come along. And then time went on, and no one came along. No one tried and whenever you made an attempt it was all in vain. The flirting from Elliott was, at first, just a fun joke between bros. Then, at some point, it started feeling a lot less platonic. You knew how genuinely caring he was, how he'd do whatever it took to make someone happy, what an utter gentleman he was. The fact that the Apex Games was his only reason for still being single was mindboggling. He was a wonderful guy.
Despite his little quirks that turned most people away, they drew you in. The way he stumbled over big words, him being a mama's boy, his over the top display... All of it.
"Okay- so I had an idea about the decoys. Is there a way to make them... I dunno.. More solid? Less easy to bump into and force to accidentally shatter a glass?" Elliott proposed what felt like his billionth unfulfillable request this week to you as you sat down and started fixing some parts on his costume that had broken during a recent escapade on Olympus. He tried to bring it up casually but these requests almost always came during the silence of your work that he wanted to be filled.
"No, Elliott. I already told you I'm not that kind of engineer." The tech sparked at you and you cussed at it under your breath, continuing working with the wires before speaking again. "I dont have the unbridled genius to figure that out. I keep you up to date and implement whatever other people give me, besides..." You paused, remembering something he brought up a while ago.
"Didnt you work on this tech anyways?""I- yeah... fair point... But that was with my mom, and.. she cant really help me with that now." He trailed off at the end of the sentence, voice dropping a bit. He sheepishly chuckled and stayed quiet for a moment, waiting for your reply as he watched you intently.
"Oh. Yeah. Shit man, I'm sorry." Ah. The sore spot. You had to stifle a grimace as you remembered about his mom. I mean, you knew about her you just.. Tended to forget.
Elliott was quick to shoot down your apology, brushing it off and forgiving you immediately
"No no! Its okay. I dont talk about it much. You almost done, by the way?" He laughed awkwardly as he kept himself from fidgeting too much. One thing Mirage was not good at was sitting still for extended periods of time that didnt involve sniping. He hadnt even bothered to take off his gear, coming straight to you as soon as the ship landed back on Psmathe after hovering around Olympus.
"Almost." Was the one word reply he got from you, mainly due to the fact that you had begun hyperfocusing on finishing the job quicker while still maintaining your oath to quality work.
A few minutes later and you successfully managed to fix up all the effed up tech on Mirage's arms. All was well. The first thing both of you did without even thinking about it was standing up and stretching. Sitting down that long in admittedly uncomfortable metal chairs was not ideal for one's back or posture. When you realized you both synced up that movement, you laughed softly.
Elliott grinned at you and spoke, that usual smug grin on his face as he leaned forward a bit.
"Say, how bout I treat you to dinner for all your hard work?"
He winked at you, awaiting a response. You took it as you normally took the flirting. A joke.
"Sure thing, ostentatious ass. Hope youre ready for prowler barbeque."You grinned back at him, meeting his eyes as you stared straight at him, not backing down. Elliott leaned further forward, coming closer to you than he normally did.
"I have no clue what that means but I'm taking it as a compliment." He chuckled as he paused, then spoke again, the smug grin fading into a more serious and vulnerable look.
"I'm serious, [Y/N]. I want to take you out on a- on a date. Genuinely. Like. For real. I mean you can always say no if you want and I know we normally joke about this stuff and that we're both guys and I dont even know where you lean but I just I really app- appriss- appre- I'm grateful for what you do for me and I know that its like your job but-"He was cut off rather unceremoniously by a kiss from you. Normally being this bold, let alone having this idea never even occurred to you, but there was something about the idea of shutting his (quite frankly ADORABLE) rambling off with a kiss that was rather enticing. Not to mention it was an internal reference to a pretty good (and old) song.
He stiffened in surprise, eyes widening for a moment before he grinned softly against your lips and kissed you back with only a hint of hesitation. You broke away from it after a moment, once you heard his hands brace himself on your desk.
"I'll take you up on that offer then, Elliott."
