It's Saturday morning, the day of the fight, and I feel the energy of London as we approach the O2 Arena. I would be doing Cage-Side Commentary with Daniel Cormier, Jon Anik and Joe Rogan. Despite Joe being the bigger name, it was decided that I would be doing the cage interviews, being that this was only my second appearance outside of the USA.
"Michael Bisping has a very difficult fight ahead of him tonight, Fight Fans. Mia, how do you see this fight panning out?" Jon Annik asks me. I hit my microphone button and answered.
"Bisping certainly has his work cut out for him, Jon, but I spoke to Jason Parillo yesterday, and he said Michael's been very confident throughout his whole Camp that his style is a strong match for Anderson. I never wanna discount the Spider, but I'm wondering how age and pressure will affect the outcome."
"You're absolutely right, Mia." Joe speaks up, "Bisping is a cardio machine. If this fight goes into the Championship Rounds, I think it starts weighing in Bisping's favor. But, he has to survive against one of the most devastating strikers in UFC History."
"The hometown crowd certainly has Bisping in their hearts." Daniel Cormier pipes in, "And is it true what I'm hearing? Is Bisping in your heart as well, Mia?"
"Let's just say, I've had a little crush for a while, DC." I wink to him. He knows a little about the dodging done between Michael and I in the lead up for this fight. Joe raises an eyebrow but says nothing until we're signaled that we're off air.
"Be straight with me, Mia." Joe whispers to me, leaning close so Jon and DC can't eavesdrop. "I saw you out with Luke at Battlin' Jack's and you looked cozy. I love Bisping, he's a great guy, but I've known Rockhold for a while now too, and he's crazy about you. What's up?"
"Luke's a great guy, and whoever ends up with him will be a super lucky girl. He's handsome, he's sweet, he's great with kids..." I sigh. "Look... Joe... I'll tell you and the world everything when Michael wins, okay?" Joe nods once, understanding somewhat that I had something to say, but now wasn't the time. I had fighter interviews and analysis to do. I grab my notes and the Undercard list, and turn my eyes to the cage.Fight Analysis with Joe, Jon and DC is lively, competitive at times, but friendly and I feel that between me and DC, we break down the technical moves and Joe and Jon have amazing reactions and great ways of calling the action. It's a full booth for sure and I have to fight to get my points in, but I like the challenge. I'd gotten a reputation for always telling things like they are and being able to predict the winning shots in a fight. The undercard ends and I sneak off to go to the bathroom. It takes me a long time to get there as I'm stopped by UK fans the entire walk there, and then there's a sizable queue in the bathroom. I notice the fighter's corner doors and slip inside, showing my Commentator badge to security.
"Mia!" I hear my name being called. "I heard you were in London." It's Chael Sonnen. He's here for the fights and probably for his podcast. I want to roll my eyes at him. The rumors about me hooking up with Chael were true, and the rumors about my "Training Vacation" in Portland were also true. And despite my turning him down, it worked out for the best because Chael met Brittany at a fight and he fell in love. He called me to tell me he met his future wife and I'd been overjoyed. I turned him down when he asked for more but we agreed to stay friends. I never returned to Portland but Chael and I chatted weekly. In my haste to leave Las Vegas, I'd forgotten to text him that I would be here in London.
"Chael." I greet, meeting him in the fighter's tunnel and reaching out for a handshake but he closes the distance to make it a hug. "It's so good to see you."
"It's good to be seen, great even. How's the kiddo, Lucas?"
"He's doing well. He's at home with my parents while I play here in London." I replied. He chuckles at my jest. "I've got to get back to the commentator's booth, but if you're here for a few days, we could grab a drink maybe?" I ask.
"What are you doing later?" Chael asks. He's married and I have to think about Michael. Besides, our flirting was harmless. It made the fact that he'd talked about us hooking up on his podcast sting a little less. A question was asked by one of his listeners, since it'd been documented that I left with him from a bar one night, and because our friendship at least was public. The listener asked what Chael's opinion was on Luke's very obvious crush on me. He'd simply replied that anyone who thought Luke was my baby daddy is an idiot because with how in love Luke was with me, he would have made me his wife before now if Lucas were his. Which was probably true. He then went on to explain that I "Just had a thing" for handsome fighters, listing himself, Luke, and Carlos Condit as my "type", and told a PG version of how he and I ended up hooking up. He said some very charming things about how nice my home was, and how he'd even borrowed some of the "Suspiciously Middleweight sized" gym clothes in a specific drawer in my closet to hit a workout in my garage, and detailed down to the first batch of burned eggs the breakfast we shared. I wanted to strangle him at the time, but now it just mildly annoyed me. The whole video blew over with most fans saying "Damn, Mia's got game." and I was labeled a MILF. I chose to be flattered.
"I already told Michael I'd get a drink with him tonight." I reply. "But I'll be here until next Thursday."
"Want to grab lunch and do an interview for my show before you fly out?" He asks. I nod eagerly.
"It's a deal. Text me."
