Tuesdays were generally Ananya's long days. Her last batch of dance students did not leave until 7pm plus she had to manage Shivani's batch too since she had gone out on a date with her boyfriend. Ananya was already in a bad mood when she left back home. After beating the traffic, she got even more annoyed to find their gate wide open. She knew right away that there was a visitor and she was in no mood for pleasantries.
She saw the dirty scooter parked there, which she immediately recognized and rolled her eyes. She parked her two wheeler in the shed and stepped out to close the gate. She heard loud laughter sounds as she was entering the house. She left her footwear on the shoe shelf placed on the porch, cleaned her bare feet on the mat placed outside the front door, which, by the way, was wide open for all the mosquitoes to have a party. She stepped in and shut the front door behind her only to be invited by a familiar voice that said, "Vaa maa kozhandai. Unna pathi thaan pesindu irundhom." She rolled her eyes once again but turned around with a fake smiled saying, "vaango mama. Eppo vandhel? Coffee saap..." she noticed the copper tumbler and dabara in his hand, enjoying the piping hot fresh filter coffee, that he was pouring down his throat. It was none other than the astrologer.
It had been more than two months since the initial discussion about the wedding but nothing had been spoken since so Ananya had assumed that nothing much was happening in that front. Just when she was about to walk away, the man continued, "oru first class varan kondu vandhirukken unakku. 10 poruthamum amsama porundhardhu. Ippidi oru match naan ennoda 40 varsha service la paathadhillai. Romba nalla family. Paiyan business pannaraan. Oho nu poindu irukku. Forbes magazine aame, Ungalukku therinjirukkum adhellam. Adhula ellam peru vandhirukkam. Jammunnu irukkan paakardhukku. Oru ketta pazhakkamum illai" Ananya was just waiting for the next word and then it popped, "orey oru vishayam thaan. Unga rendu perukkum oru 8 varsha vayasu vithyasam irukku. Adhu thaan but Adhellam sagajam thaane, illiya?"
Ananya could not take it anymore. She politely mumbled, "Mama Neenga Appa Amma kitte pesindu irungo. Naan konjam freshen up aagittu varen" and she quickly walked inside muttering. She went straight to her grandmother's room and shut the door. She went and hugged her grandma who was chanting with her rudraksha japa Mala but quickly kissed her grand daughters cheek and gestured if she wanted something to drink. Ananya nodded a No and said, "Paati maa. Enakku ippo kalyanam vendaam paatimaa. Neeyavudhu sollen un pulla kitta. Enna pack off pannardhukiye kuriya irukka rendu perum." That's when she noticed the hearing aid hanging on her shoulder. Ananya sighed and plugged the machine in her ears saying, "Paatimaa idhu unakku Edhukku vaangi thandirukka nu theriyuma theriyadha? Naan sonnadhu onnum kaadhula vaangadhe nee. Inge yaarume illai ennoda polambal kekka. Seri naan dress change panittu varen." Ananya stepped out of the room to go into her room which was just across from there. She had a nice attached bathroom so she quickly changed into a loose knee length pant and a t- shirt. She then tied up her waist length thick hair into a top knot. Then she stuck her bindi in the bathroom mirror and turned on the cold water to wash her face. It felt refreshing. She grabbed the towel to pat dry her face and applied a moisturizer. Ananya was very particular about her skin routine as she had sensitive skin. She still carried a few blemishes which were now, almost invisible.
Thankfully, when she stepped out of her room, the astrologer had left and it was just her mom, dad and brother talking. Ananya realized that she was famished so she went to the kitchen where they were all gathered. Paatiamma had already had her porridge and was ready to lie down. Ananya helped her lie down and then turned off the light. She switched on the mosquito repellant which was also a night lamp. She shut the door before walking to the kitchen, from where, the aroma of dosa was inviting. She walked into the mappillai conversation but not before grabbing her plate and walking straight up to her mom for the fresh one that she was making. Although, there was a dining table at their house, no one used it for the right purpose. They all gathered on the kitchen floor especially when Dosa or poori were being made.
Ananya grabbed the dosai and took a generous portion of both the coconut as well as the tomato chutney and sat down beside her father, on the floor. "Appa, enna pa idhu? Adha aal edho uncle oda jaadagam serum nu solaraar. Neenga enna na boom boom maadu madiri mandaya aataringa. Ennala mudiyadhu pa." Her brother literally choked hearing Ananya's words and her mom turned around to give her a glare but her Dad smiled and said, "Anu kutty, age is just a number da chellam. Jaadagam super a porindeerku. Nalla family. This boy is well settled with good habits. Naanga Unna ennikadhu force paneerkoma, sollu? Just meet him and see what you think. Time eduthukko maa but appidiye odharaadhe. Unakku pudicha mattum thaan maa we will go forward. Please, Appa kaaga meet pannu."
Ananya stretched out her plate to her mom for the fifth dosai when her brother said, "Semma handsome aa irukaar di maapillai, movie actor madiri. Unakku pudicha madiri nalla height vera." She frowned at him, "Maapillai keepillai na avvalo dhan sollitten. Avvalo pudichirukku na Neeye kalyanam panniko po." Her mom glared at her saying, "Loose madiri pesadhe di. Modhalla nee andha paiyanoda details, photo ellam paaru. Unakku irukara vaai ku Unna meikka unnoda konjam vayasula periyavara irundha thaan seri pattu varum." Ananya stuck her tongue out at her mom and dropped the plate in the sink and ran the water. Then she went to the fridge and poured some cold water gown her throat. She then glanced at her father and said, "Seri paakaren but enakku pudikkalena we will move on, deal?" He dad smiled and raised his hand for a high-five.
Ananya helped her mom clean the dishes then went to her room and shut the door. She decided to watch some YouTube interviews by her favourite actor but wasn't able to focus. She thought to herself, "Appa anupina profile paapom. Eppidiyum uncle madiri thaan irukka pordhu andha moonji. Seri click pannuvom." She first read through the bio which was quiet impressive. Then she clicked on to the image below.
Ananya's heart skipped a beat. She definitely wasn't expecting this. She immediately messaged Shivani, "Ei paithiyam, nee unnoda boyfriend kooda konjindu irukke nu theriyum but naaliki after class Fruit Bae porom. Paiyanoda bio and pic vandhirukku." In less then a min Shivani responded, "Send the pic now, now, now." Ananya sent her a laughing emoji and said, "Nee innikki night thoonga koodadhu. Excitement liye saavu. Naan thoonga poren. GN" and switched off her phone to slip into dream land.
