"One, two, three, let's go!" The team says in unison as we break from our huddle.
It was seconds before the finals of our senior year mock trial. We are facing off against our rival school; Redwood High. Redwood is the 2nd most prestigious school in our local area, right behind us, Coral Springs High. Our schools have been rivals for decades, even before I was born. The #1 spot has been held by both of our schools, on and off.
We are determined to win the finals this year. Not only do we have a prestigious title to uphold, but we currently have a 2 year win streak.
I walk into the court room and sit in my chair. The judge says her introduction speech, and then introduced the lead attorneys. I'm so honored to finally be the lead attorney this year. I have been waiting to hear these next words for years.
"The defendant will be represented by Y/N from Coral Springs High" I hear the judge say.
I stand up, proud, while my teammates and others cheer me on. After everyone settles down, the judge introduces the other leading attorney.
"The plaintiff will be represented by Kim Mingyu from Redwood High"
Everyone once again stood up to clap, including me.
My first thought, though, was 'wow, he has the same name as my best friend from grade school.'
I suddenly got a rush of memories from when I was a little kid. I remember spending every moment I could with him. Even our parents used to joke about how they thought we would get married one day.
But alas, I haven't seen him in years; I don't even know what he's up to now.
I break from my thoughts when winter taps my arm. Realizing that I'm the only one still standing, I embarrassingly sit back down.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see this Mingyu guy laugh.
'What is he laughing at?' I think to myself. 'Whatever, I'm gonna win this case.'
Throughout the trial, I kept catching Mingyu looking at me, but maybe I was just being delusional because I kept thinking about him.
'Is it even possible that he's the same Mingyu that I used to know? No. Not a chance.'
'He is really pretty tho.' I think, mesmerized by his appearance.
...
After the trial was about over, the judges were discussing the result, and everyone was waiting with anticipation.
The judge finally stands and says "we here find the defendant..."
"...not guilty!"
"Coral Springs High is the winner!"
I stand up with excitement overwhelming me. My team shares a group hug, everyone on the verge of tears.
I look at Winter as she says "you did it."
She looks so proud of me, it makes me tear up even more.
"We did it" I correct.
I hug Winter tight.
Suddenly I became very aware that I was crying, so I hid my face in Winters shoulder.
'I don't want Mingyu to see me crying' I think.
'Wait, what?' I ask myself. 'Why do I care about what Mingyu thinks? I don't even know him.'
I shake my head to get him out of my mind, and continue to hug Winter.
After wiping my tears, we walk out into the hall, where everyone began to converse.
I hug my teachers and friends, getting congratulated and encouraged by all.
Suddenly, I hear a voice behind me.
"Y/N?"
I turn around.
It's Mingyu.
