Maria sighed, standing in front of Alex's apartment door. She debated just running now, but she would have to work on the project soon enough. It was better sooner than later. She knocked, shifting the bag on her shoulders.

They hadn't even figured out what they were doing for the project. It just had to prove the theory of evolution. Maria wasn't sure why the project couldn't be done by just one person, but she didn't argue.

She was greeted by a smiling woman, who she guessed to be Alex's mom. She had light brown curls and a bright pearly smile. She looked like the perfect type of mom, the kind you'd see on TV and wished you had.

"You must be Maria." She smiled, her nerves riling up even more as walked inside. It was homey, pictures of the Pope littered the walls along with crosses and family photos. No pictures filled Maria's walls at her home, they were bare and plain looking. Like the pictures you take when you're selling a house. Overly clean, with sharp corners on the blankets that covered the edges of the bed.

"Yes, it's nice to meet you, Ms. Alvarez." She gulped, seeing Alex appear from down the hall, the smell of cologne clinging to the air around him.

"Penelope is just fine." She chuckled, seeing that Maria was visibly nervous. Penelope heard Alex mention Maria once or twice, and even Elena said she'd heard of her, but this was the first time she was seeing her. She really was a pretty girl, and Alex said she was smart too. He also said she was a goody-goody, but not the annoying kind.

It was nice to see Alex in something other than his school uniform. Maria envied the kids that could wear whatever they wanted to school. Or whatever they wanted that still fit the dress code. She didn't like the uniformed long skirts and shirts, they were more than boring.

Maria's regular clothes weren't much better. Her dad had to approve of whatever clothes she wore. Which meant ripped jeans, yoga pants, and leggings were something she could only wear at home. Skinny jeans and sweatpants were perfectly fine. T-shirts that were a tad baggy were preferred, and extremely formfitting shirts were strictly prohibited.

So, Maria wore a slightly baggy shirt that she'd gotten from a vacation to Hawaii and jeans. All paired with her black and white checkered vans that she'd gotten years ago. Her dad had no clue she was with Alex, or out of the house since he was so busy at work.

"Maria," Alex smirked, leading her to the small table that sat in front of their bar, "I wish Sister Barbara assigned us a project way sooner if it meant I'd get to hang out with you." Maria rolled her eyes, sitting in the chair beside him.
