the night before my first day of middle school my older sister Jen had me watch her take care of our drunk mom make sure she doesn't choke on her own vomit, sit her up, how to clean her up from the couch how to hide all the bottles and bags how and when to put her to bed so when dad gets home he just thinks shes asleep and at the time I didn't understand why she was making me watch her but now I know she was training me because that was her last night at the house our final night together and she taught me how to to keep my mother alive
we were up past 2 am before I crashed on the couch while my sister was putting all the cleaning supplies away, so when my dad woke me up by pushing me off the couch less than four hours later,I fell right back to sleep the floor, till I got a kick and the ''get up lazy'' scream from my dad forced me into my bedroom
Jen usually lays out my uniform and school things so I scatter to find it all and make it out of the house before I get scolded yet again, I've only walked here once with Jen but we had walked a lot so I felt confident
after a few wrong turns, I got there only 20 minutes late and slip into a ajar door
I sit by a girl with long curly hair she wore a jean jacket and had hot pink glasses she smiled at me then her eyes darted up to the front of the room '' was she here for attendance'' the math teacher questions the curly hair girl '' yes she just didn't hear her name get called you know she listens to all that loud music'' she panders to the teacher, I mouth thank you and she gives me a thumbs up I didn't know it yet but she wouldn't only cover me for the rest of the school year but she became the closest thing I had to a friend she gave me her lunch most days because her medication took her appetite, shared her clothes and showed me kindness so I protected her at all coast my little ball of kindness something that was so rare for me to see
when we got to high school Beth and I made sure we had as many classes together as possible and always ate lunch together her family got me my motorcycle for Christmas during freshmen year that did so much for me
Beth even rode on it once never again but once
