Chapter 3 - Harriet POV
As we walked down the bustling corridor, I could feel the weight of people’s stares on my back. It was disturbing, but understandable. I was the lost girl, the one who knew nothing. Next to me was Chris, a solid barrier of not-to-be-messed-with stuff. Although he could glare at anyone who made remarks, he couldn’t stop the stares. I wanted to tell him that it didn’t matter. I wanted to tell him I didn’t mind what people said. But I did. I wanted to be accepted by everybody. I was Harriet
It was like starting a new school. I didn’t know my way around. I didn’t know anybody. I didn’t know my timetable. But I knew it wasn't a knew school. It was a backwards sort of deja vu. I knew I had been here before, I just couldn't remember. This part of my memory was locked up somewhere in my brain, somewhere currently inaccessible. At that moment, I wanted nothing more than to run home and hide under Harriet’s bed covers. But it was too late to turn back now. Harriet was brave.
We reached the lockers and I looked questionably at Chris. I saw him swallow and an unreadable smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
“Number 120,” he said opening his own locker “two down that way” he added, noticing that I was looking at all the numbers on the lockers. I smiled back at him gratefully and opened my locker, praying that I would find a lesson timetable. I turned back to him to see him staring at me.
“You knew your combination” his eyes swelled with hope. I had known my combination.... but only since my mum had told me it this morning. The code was the digits of my birthday.
“Yeh… just came back to me” it came out my mouth before I had time to think. He was broken already because of me. The least I could do was give him some hope.
His smile widened and I smiled back at him, trying to look convincing.
After retrieving our books, we made our way to our first lesson which was together, English.
As I walked through the door, the teacher rushed up to me and ushered me to the front of the class.
“I’m Mr. Martin,” he said giving me a kind smile “I’m very sorry to hear about…about….” he trailed off.
“So am I” I replied a bit harsher than I had meant to. Kind I could deal with, but I didn’t need his sympathy. I had received way too much of that already. I just wanted people to treat me normally, like they did before. Was that so hard?
Mr. Martin began addressing class.
“Class please take your seats,” most sat quietly while some continued talking until they got a glare from Mr. Martin.
“As some of you know, Harriet here was involved in a… incident…. earlier this year” whoa… where was this going. No-one needed to know the details. How would people treat me normally then? He seemed not to notice my look of discomfort and carried on regardless “she has lost her memory so to help her; we are all going to stand up, say your name and one thing about you and Harriet.”
Mr. Martin looked pleased with himself. He thought this would help me? Not wanting to create a fuss, I played along, praying that my memory did in fact come back.
The first to stand up was a fragile looking mousy girl with rectangular glasses that added to her ‘intelligent physique’.
“I’m Daphne,” she said giving me a perfect straight smile, probably corrected by braces, “we are chemistry partners and I work at the organic store where you buy your dog food.”
I had a dog? Note to self: ask my mum about that when I got home. The next person to stand up was a slightly podgy ginger kid with a frightful complexion who shuffled nervously from foot to foot, not quite meeting my eye as he talked.
“My names Eddie,” he mumbled, gaze not leaving his feet, “uurmm… in fifth grade, we were sheep together in the nativity but you stomped on my foot and broke my toe before the show so I couldn’t go on.” The class sniggered at my horrified face.
“I….errm… I didn’t do it deliberately did I?” what if I had? Was Harriet a horrible person, a bully?
The boys face turned beetroot and his nervous shuffling increased, his fingers uneasily twisting around each other.
“That’s quite enough Eddie,” said Mr. Martin, coming to both of our rescue. His face was almost as red as his students “Who is next?”
The rest of the class all stood up and told me a little bit about themselves. I learnt small bits of information but nothing brought a monumental flashback, restoring me to my former state. We were nearing the end, at the back of the class. There was one more to go.
“I’m Chase,” he said flashing a drop-dead gorgeous smile. He was one of those typical jock type who think they are God's gift to women. His blonde hair was perfectly tousled with the always sexy bed-head look. He had pretty boy blue eyes that mached his features. From what I could see from the other side of the classroom, he had a pretty built, athletic physique no doubt from a life filled with sport and energetic partying. His mouth opened again, he wasnt finished,
“and I’m your boyfriend!” the size of his smirk increased from being big headed to feeling like the king of the world.WHAT THE HELL?? This was not my boyfriend?? What was sport God doing with a girl like Harriet. She was confused. He may as well have been the quarterback and captain of the football team.
“And I’m the quarterback and captain of the football team,” he smirked, adding insult to injury. I looked around the class and they were looking as shocked as me. I turned to look at Chris and I saw a multitude of emotions cross his face. First was a stare of disbelief followed by betrayal and then anger. He looked up and his fierce gaze met hers. Overwhelmed by the intensity of his scrutiny, she turned away.
So much for an uneventful first day back at school. Welcome to your life, Harriet.
