Harry woke slowly, his limbs feeling heavy as he tried to open his eyes. He yawned as he stretched out, a pleasant smell coming from his sheets. He peered around the room before freezing. This wasn't his room. It was bright and open despite the dark wooden floors. The bedsheets were green and the bed was large with a thick headboard. He could see a giant mirror against the wall in front of him and eased himself out of bed. He peeked at his reflection before grimacing. He looked like he had slept the whole day away! This is why he rarely took potions. They always made him drowsy and he would be out like a light. He tried to pat his hair down to no avail before looking closer at the bedroom he was in. A picture on the mantle had him smiling slightly. It was of Draco and the boys. They must have been sledding because they were all covered in snow and Scorpius's little cheeks were bright red. Harry assumed Atticus's were as well, the younger boy was covered head to toe so all he could see were his eyes.
"Harry." A voice murmured from behind him and he whirled around, his foot catching on the rug. He would have fallen if quick hands hadn't caught him. Draco gently set him back on his feet before looking over him in worry.
"Your friends said you would be okay but-" he trailed off.
"It's the potions. Hermione thinks I have a low tolerance for them." He yawned again before patting Draco's arm.
"How long have I been asleep? Where am I?" Draco shuffled his feet as he refused to meet his gaze.
"You've only been asleep for a couple of hours. You're in my room." Harry had already guessed as much but he was curious as to why.
"The boys have been setting up for the sleepover." He stood still before bursting into movement as he latched into Draco's hand and dragged him from the room.
"The sleepover! Merlin! Draco, walk faster! We have so much to do." He burst into the kitchen and the three House Elves stared at him, their large eyes even wider with shock.
"Hello! My name is Harry. I'm going to be taking over for a little bit." Dobby was already bouncing on his toes as he nodded his head.
"Mistress needs help?" Dobby squeaked and the other two elves gave him a horrified look.
"Yes, Dobby! First, what are your names?" The brown eyed elf stepped forward, her tea towel embroidered with an M above her heart.
"Hello, Mistress. My name's Poppy." She whispered, her eyes firmly on the ground.
"Mistress, my name is Daisy." Daisy was twisting her ear as she talked, a nervous tick many house elves seemed to have.
"Wonderful! Nice to meet you, ladies." He squatted down as he spoke, knowing how scary it could be to have someone tower over you. He smiled brightly at them as they hesitantly met his gaze.
"Alright, I need to make some food for tonight. Poppy, would you show me where everything is located?" She hurriedly pointed out the different cupboards, her tone high pitched.
"Thank you, Poppy!" She flushed as she scuttled back to Daisy's side. Harry cracked his back before he got to work.
Two hours later, he slumped into his chair. Merlin, he hadn't baked so much in years. After he left the Dursley's, Kreature made most of his meals. Harry had seldom stepped foot in his own kitchen since Kreature would start sobbing that he was a bad elf. He hated upsetting his crazy little friend so he just stayed out. He had forgotten how much he had enjoyed it. It was one of the few chores he hadn't minded doing despite his Aunt's beady eyes always waiting for him to mess up.
"Harry? Perhaps I could help with something?" Draco was sitting in the corner of the room on a stool. Anyone who walked in would have thought he was in time out, which he was. He had tried to sneak a cookie as Harry had pulled them out of the oven, a hard smack to the hand with his spoon stopping him. Harry had ordered him to the corner and he went, pouting the whole time.
"Are you going to try and steal the treats I'm making for the children?" Harry asked and Draco hunched his shoulders as he slunk closer.
"I promise I won't, Harry. Everything just smells so good and I stayed by your side the whole time you were asleep because I was so worried." Harry blinked as Draco took his hand, his eyes full of sincerity. He was so thrown by such a tender look that he wasn't able to stop him from shoving a whole brownie in his mouth as he dove across the room. He put his hands on his hips before sighing.
"I suppose you can have one more." He had stayed by his side, Harry thought, his chest warm at the gesture.
"You're so sweet to me, Harry." Draco murmured as he chewed happily. Harry could feel his cheeks warming up and blamed the oven beside him.
"Do you enjoy baking?"
"Yes. It's been a while but I used to cook often when I lived with my Aunt." Draco looked confused as he leaned against the counter.
"When did you have time to learn how to cook? Didn't you go to Hogwarts at eleven?" Harry avoided his gaze as he started putting everything on plates.
"Aunt Petunia started teaching me when I was able to reach the stove. Of course, it became easier when I learned how to actually read." Harry could remember the few times he had burnt dinner and shuddered. It had not ended well for him. He realized Draco didn't respond and faced him. He squawked as hands gripped his shoulders, the jarring motion gentle because Draco was gentle.
"I see. I'll have to start making a list of people to get rid of."
"Draco! You can't say things like that." Harry looked around to make sure no one was lurking nearby.
"Harry, I'm the Head of an Ancient and Noble House. I'm also a rather good lawyer. If I can't defend my way out of a sticky situation, I can pay my way out." Draco was oozing confidence as he snagged a cookie.
"But-"
His hand covered his mouth as Draco leaned forward until their noses were touching.
"I won't let anyone hurt you, Harry. You're important to me and the children. Malfoy's always protects what's theirs." He jumped as the timer went off and rushed towards the stove, his chest heaving. How was he supposed to respond to that?
