Alysson POV

Fire.

That's what my dad said before he died

Fire.

And not until now did I know what that meant.

I've tried not to think about me, my situation, or pretty much my life. I also pretend that I have the same typical life of any twelve year old. Unfortunatly, that's not the case.

I live in a different neighborhood than you probably do. Full of tasty I mean beautiful deer, birds, and rabbits. If you are vomiting right now, I don't blame you, but you can't blame me. My mom died in a car accident when I was really young; I hardly remember her. My dad died from cancer, and after that all I knew was that I didn't want to get taken away to an orphanage. Just the word orphan makes me shiver. You might think that living in the woods is the worst alternative, but I think otherwise.

Actually right now I'm pretty hungry. I grab my bow and arrow and jump to the ground from my former position on the tree branch. Careful not to scare away any game, I tiptoe my way to the snare I set earlier. When I get there, there's nothing in the vines, so I hike up to a quiet stream in hope a deer or two was taking a sip of water.

The weather's nice, early spring I think. Every so often, there's a patch of melting snow, but most of the time I walk on matted, wet grass. The day's are getting longer, and that benefits more than it doesn't. When I get to the creek, I'm in luck, because a whole family of deer, fawn and all, were sipping water from the cold spring.

Out of instinct, I drop to the ground and crawl to a nearby bush. Peeking over the top of it, I watch the peaceful deer family. I grab an arrow, position my bow and abruptly stand. The deer family is alerted, and they freeze in my direction. I'm about to release my arrow when I hear the ring of the first gunshot.
