When we get back Alice is sitting with Esme, their heads bent over books that must be centuries old. Relics from Carlisle's time with Aro containing vampire histories and legends.
Thankfully Edward is out running errands with Carlisle, so he can't hear my thoughts. And Alice is too busy focusing on Ren to be paying my future any mind.
I pick up my phone from the coffee table, so I can call Jane when Alice agrees, and slide my hand over my wife's shoulder and pull her away from the page and closer to me.
"Hey babe." She smiles, nuzzling her head into my neck.
"Hey Ali. Did you find anything?" I ask, knowing very well that they've checked these books dozens of times already.
"No." Sadness drips like cold melted snow from her words and heavy dark clouds surround her usually blissful aura. Seeing her this way over something she has no hope of controlling breaks my heart. If only the Cullens would accept help from Aro. With so many people searching for answers, we're bound to find them. If there are any. I push the pessimism away and focus on cheering up my wife.
I just need to get on with it. I hold out hope that she'll say yes and let it push me forward. "Ali, come outside with me. I need to talk to you about something."
She must sense my hesitation, "Can't we talk here?"
"No. I want this to be between us."
"Alright?" She's confused but follows me back outside anyway.
I hold her hand tightly while we run out of hearing range of the house. I take her back to the spot where I talked with Jane. Alice noticed the scent and immediately tenses.
"Jasper, Jane was here, we have to go!"
I grab her arm, holding her close to me, "Ali, calm down! This is what I wanted to discuss with you."
"And you want to keep the fact that The Volturi are here a secret, why???"
"No, it's just two of them. Jane and Felix. They're not out to hurt anyone, and they promised not to hunt while they're here." She thrashes in my grip and I dislike keeping her against her will but I need her to hear me out. "You need to listen to me, Alice. This is about all of us."
"Fine."
"Okay." I let her go and take a breath, "Jane is here as a mere formality. This isn't about Carlisle's coven, it's about us. What I want for us."
"What do you mean?"
"Think about it, the numbers are even. Edward has found his mate, he has a family, he isn't lonely anymore. He isn't in desperate need of a friend anymore. And I miss the rest of my family." I can tell how homesick I sound.
"Peter and Charlotte?"
"No, they are my friends, yes but my family is the Volturi."
"The Volturi!?" She steps back aghast, her disgust hits me sharply in the chest but I force myself to continue.
"Yes, you saved me from the loneliness that comes without having a mate, but The Volturi saved me from the violence and savagery of Maria's lifestyle. They are my brothers and sisters. Aro a father figure to me. And when you showed up I followed you, because I love you too, so, so, so much. I would do anything for you and I know that you're happy here but I'm not." She opens her mouth to argue but I keep talking, "You're the most important part of my family and I want to be with all of my family. All of the people I love, in the place I love, that is all I'm asking you for. We can be together, and keep a diet of animal blood. And travel the world, no more highschool over and over and over again. Aren't you at least a little bit tired of it? Wouldn't you do this for me, my love? And if not for me, think of Renesmee, the Volturi could help us search for answers. Their libraries are vast, they may even have answers already."
