Kate's brows furrowed as she stared at her mother, a mixture of confusion and frustration filling her voice. "Mother, why do you seem to harbor such strong disapproval towards Lord Bridgerton. It's not just about the difference in our social classes, is it? What are you truly keeping from me?"
Lady Mary hesitated before continuing, her gaze searching Kate's eyes for understanding. "Kate, I must be honest with you. Lord Giles stopped by while you were out, and he spoke with both Lady Danbury and I. He expressed his strong desire to court you, claiming that he found himself smitten with you from the first night you arrived. Considering your age and the lack of other suitors, it's time to seriously consider his proposal."
Kate's heart sank, torn between her own desires and the expectations of society. " I barely even know Lord Giles," she replied, her voice tinged with bewilderment. "How can he be smitten with me when we've barely exchanged a few words?"
Lady Mary's expression softened, her concern evident. "That may be true, my dear, but you haven't exactly given him a chance either. You've been spending so much time with Lord Bridgerton that Lord Giles must feel overlooked."
Kate felt a pang of guilt, realizing that she had been preoccupied with her investigation and her growing bond with Anthony. She couldn't deny the connection she felt with him, but she also couldn't ignore the expectations and pressures from her family.
Kate's heart sank, torn between her own desires and the expectations of society. She took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts before responding. "But mama, I am not here to find a husband for myself. My sole purpose in coming to London was to support Edwina in finding a suitable match. I want her to be happy, and I will do everything in my power to ensure that happens."
Lady Mary's expression tightened, her frustration evident. "You've been spending an awful lot of time with Lord Bridgerton, and I can't help but wonder how you're meant to be a chaperone to Edwina when you're so preoccupied with him."
Kate was at a loss for words, unable to come up with a satisfactory response. She knew her feelings for Anthony were growing stronger, but she also couldn't deny her duty to her sister. The conflict in her heart weighed heavily on her, and she struggled to find the right words to convey her emotions to her mother.
Lady Mary's expression softened, her voice gentle yet firm. "Kate, I understand your desires, but we must be practical. This may be your last season to find a husband before you are permanently declared ineligible, and all you've done is waste time with Lord Bridgerton, doing God knows what. I only ask that you at least give Lord Giles a chance. Dance with him at the upcoming ball hosted by Lady Danbury. It's a small step, my dear. I just want what's best for you."
Reluctantly, Kate nodded, her mind filled with conflicting thoughts. She knew her mother was right about the limitations of her circumstances. Unbeknownst to them, Edwina had been eavesdropping on their conversation from the top of the stairs. Her eyes widened in shock, and she quickly retreated to Kate's room, her mind racing with thoughts about her sister's predicament.
As Kate rushed up the stairs, she raised an eyebrow at the sight of Edwina waiting in her room. They exchanged glances, and a knowing smile formed on Edwina's lips. The sisters settled in, their voices hushed as they began to confide in each other.
Edwina's eyes sparkled with curiosity as she leaned forward. "Kate, what was Mother talking about? Lord Giles? Marriage? Tell me everything."
Kate let out a weary sigh, her shoulders slumping. "Edwina, Mother wants me to consider marrying Lord Giles. She believes it's the practical thing to do, considering my age and the lack of other suitors. But I can't simply marry for convenience, can I?"
