Use of more Spanish than I thought. Let me know if you'd like me to translate?
———"I can't wait to see everyone tonight!" Rocio squealed in her chair. "My entire family, the music, everybody celebrating me."
"Okay, you just gotta sit still a bit longer," Vanessa tried to add the finishing touches on her makeup.
"Everything's gonna to be perfect, we're gonna dance till we can't stand, and we're gonna have a great time."
Rocio opened her eyes to see her best friend trying to hide the hurt in her eyes.
"Ya, no aguites," she took Vanessa's hand, "you've spent enough time and energy por un idiota who isn't even looking back."
"Rocio-,"
"Listen, I can't force you to enjoy yourself, but it is my birthday," she tried to make her voice more persuasive, "and I would love to share the greatest day with my best friend in the whole wide world."
Vanessa gave in to Rocio's pout, rolling her eyes and not able to hold back a smirk.
"There she is," Rocio cheered.
"I can't take you seriously."
"Please, you love me," Rocio gave her a tight squeeze before checking on the rest of the party preparations.

A couple hours later, Rocio's family and guests started to arrive. The backyard was covered with trails of papel picado, hanging off the porch, colorful balloons and a table filled with Mexican candy. Everyone sat around to eat as the music started, younger kids running from the candy table and back into the jumper. On the other side of the party, everyone's favorite cousin had arrived. He was tall, with wavy brown locks and sharp features.
"Ahi esta mi miguelito," one of his aunts stood to pinch his cheek.
He let out a soft chuckle, leaning down into her warm hug, "Tia, que gusto ver la."
"Miguel!" a man's voice called from behind him. All his uncles, hanging out by the cooler, guarding the beers.
"Mira como has crecido," Rocio's mom, Alicia, made her way to him.
"Y que guapo," a few other aunts dotted, making his cheeks increasingly red with each new pinch.
"Tia Alicia!" They shared a kiss on the cheek."
"Gracias por venir, Miguel. Listo pa' bailar?" She teased moving him to the music.
"Claro que sí," he laughed with her, "Y Rocio?"
"Over there," she pointed over to the main table, "ve, y te sirvo de comer."
"Gracias."
Making his way over, he noticed a familiar face among the family. Tapping Rocio on the shoulder, he leaned down to bury her in his big arms.
"Happy birthday pipsqueak," he teased, making Rocio playfully punch his side.
"Didn't think you would show up. Do you remember my best friend?" Rocio motioned to her.
