So that's my story. The story of a man who was too stupid to realise when he was being used. A man who became so love struck that he couldn't see the disaster that was waiting for him around the corner. A man who lost everything including his dignity.
As for Jasmine, I don't know what happened to her. Maybe she moved to Brisbane like she said she might. She was a murderer and an attempted murderer, and she had got away with it. Would she kill again? I hoped not, but with that beautiful face and smile and acting ability, who knew what she would get up to next. She was probably deceiving some other gullible idiot right now, just like she had done to me.
The next day I stocked up with more wine from the liquor mart, then went home to look for job vacancies online. I found a couple of jobs which I submitted applications for, then I looked at my watch. Eleven thirty. Rather than sit around here all day feeling miserable I decided to go into the city and maybe buy some new clothes to wear on job interviews.
I put on a cap and sunglasses, hoping to avoid the stares and whispers, then walked down the road to the station and boarded the next train which had me in the city twenty minutes later.
After wandering around a few shops my stomach started grumbling. I bought a salad roll and an energy drink and walked down the street towards none other than the park where I used to have lunch when I still had my job. The same park where I met Jasmine. The seat where we used to sit was vacant, but I passed it by. There were too many painful memories there at that seat. I found another one a bit further away.
I ate my salad roll while watching the occasional pretty girl walk by. Would I ever find love again, I mean true love? I thought I loved Jasmine, but....no I didn't want to think about her ever again, but she kept invading my memories. I was sure now that I was destined to live the rest of my life alone. I felt tears in my eyes as I thought of growing old and lonely with no one to love.
I finished my lunch and got up to go, but as I tried to brush a fly away from my face I bumped my sunglasses which fell off my face and slid under the seat. Deja vu, here we go again. I crouched down and reached under the seat.
"Is this what you're looking for?" asked a female voice.
I turned and saw a beautiful pair of legs. I scrambled to my feet. She was standing there holding out my sunglasses to me, a goddess with long dark hair, a beautiful face and a radiant smile. She looked a bit pale and her left arm was in a sling with her wrist in a cast which extended to her elbow.
I took my sunglasses from her and thanked her as she sat down on the seat. "Sit with me," she murmured. I sat next to her and she turned to look at me.
"This may seem rather forward of me," she said, "but I was wondering if I could buy you dinner tonight? You look familiar, I think I've seen you in my workplace. My name is Nikita."
Author's Note
I hope you enjoyed this story.
I tried very hard to make it the best mystery/thriller I have written.
Was I successful? I'm not sure, but I welcome your comments.
