(y'all, buckle in your seatbelts for this one)
You had driven for a little over five hours, coming to a stop at a roadside 24 hour motel when it started pouring rain like crazy as a storm rolled over.
"We can stay here for the night. You stay here, I'll get us a room." You opened the door to get out but are stopped when Henry grabs you by the arm again.
You look back at him and he shook his head.
"Where you go, I go." He said matter-of-factly making you stammer trying to argue.
But figuring safety in numbers was your best bet you sigh.
"Fine, come on." You tell him before he gets out too.
Athen running around, he uses his coat to cover both of your from the rain as you guys ran to the entrance of the motel's office.
Once inside they spot a sweet old lady behind the counter, greeting them warmly with a television playing quietly in the background.
"Hello. We're just here for a room for two. Just for the night until the rain is done." You smile, walking up to the woman.
"Of course, dear. Would you like one bed or two?" She asks making you glance back at Henry who was looking at a magazine rack just by the door.
"Whichever's available." You shrugged before taking out your wallet and swearing to yourself.
"Is everything alright?" She asked softly and sweetly, her voice reminded you of a kind grandma that'd give you candy every time you visited her house.
"Yeah, I..." You ran a hand through your wet hair stressfully. "I forgot I'm out of money."
"Oh. What about your boyfriend over there?" She asks.
"He's from a home where he wasn't allowed to work for money so it's... it's a very complicated situation. I'm sorry for disturbing you, Ma'am."
You were about to walk away, not wanting to take advantage of the poor woman.
"Wait, sweetie." She calls after you, stopping you and making you turn back to her. She's already holding out a key.
"Since it's just until the rain dies down, you guys can stay on the house." She smiled making your graciously smile back.
"Thank you, miss. This means the world." You said. "If there's anything I can do to repay you just let me know."
"I have been a bit short staffed as of late but you don't have to worry about that now. You two get some rest." She nods, her smile never leaving her face.
"Thank you so much." You said one last time before taking your leave, dragging Henry with you.
Walking up to your room under the cover of the motel's roof, you lead the way with Henry close behind you.
"We got so lucky tonight, Henry, I don't think you even know." You said to him, your voice as relieved as it's sounded in a long time.
"I'm glad things worked out." He smiles down at you as you unlocked the door.
But upon opening it and switching on the light, you see there was only one bed.
(oh no, how horrible)
You both stiffened at the sight.
And with no second option other than the cramped car, you both enter the room in defeat, setting down your stuff by the door.
"Could be worse." You shrugged, walking over to a door that you thought was a bathroom only to see it was a closet.
Then remembering how you saw restrooms in the office, you groan.
