"Momma?" Lydia stood there at the phone, dumbfounded.

Her mom answered the phone?

"You answered the phone, momma. You got out of bed." Lydia said, a smile very clear in her voice.

"Yeah baby, I did."

Her mom was feeling better. At least she thought she was.

"That's a big step, momma. I'll be home later, maybe we can do something together?" Lydia asked, her voice full of hope.

"Mhm, that sounds nice, baby." Her mom answered, her voice quiet.

And with that, Lydia hung up the phone.

She ran outside, and the four boys turned to look at her.

"Hey Reg, do you think you could give me a ride home?" She asked, her voice almost frantic.

"Yeah, what's wrong? Everything okay?" He asked, getting up.

She nodded quickly.

"Yeah, everything is good. Everything's amazing, actually." She said, slipping on her shoes.

She quickly gave the other three boys hugs and ran out the front door, Reggie following behind her.

She hopped into the front seat of his trans am and waited for him impatiently.

"Thanks so much, Reg." Lydia said. She gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before she hopped out of the car and ran to her front door.

His cheeks flushed a light pink. He watched her walk into her house, studying the way her hips swayed slightly as she walked.

His mind started to wander, thinking of her body. He bit his bottom lip gently.

He heard her front door close, quickly drawing him out of his thoughts.

He sped off, a cloud of dust behind him.

Lydia

I ran in my house, looking around for my mother. I spot her in the living  room.

"Momma!" I exclaim, wrapping her small frame in my arms.

"Hey baby girl." She said, a smile forming on her face. She wrapped her arms around my torso and laid her head on my shoulder.

We stood there for a bit before we broke the hug up.

"Does daddy know you're up?" I ask, curious.

She shook her head.

"No, I wanna surprise him when he gets home." She said, her smile fading a small bit.

I nod and walk into the kitchen.

"We should cook dinner so it's ready when he gets here." I say, glancing at the clock.

It's been a while since we've had a hot meal, let alone eat as a family.

"Yeah, yeah we should. What are you thinking?" She asks, helping me look for something.

I pull a pack of chicken out of the fridge that I bought the day before.

"This and maybe some mac and cheese? It's not much but we haven't gone shopping in awhile."

She nods and pulls out a pan and a pot.

Time skip

I heard the door open and shut. I look around the corner and met the eyes of my father.

"Daddy! You're home, I have a surprise!" I say, grabbing his hand and leading him to the kitchen.

He grumbles a bit but follows me.

My moms eyes light up when she sees my father. She gets up from the table.

"Mark, baby." She says, embracing him.

"Hey Crystal." He says, a smile forming on his face.

I haven't seen my father smile in years. Maybe things will be different this time.

"We made dinner. It's not much but it's what we had." I say, fixing him a plate.

He sat down at the head of the table and waited for his food. I set it down in front of him and sit down in my chair.

I fix myself a plate and my mom does the same.

That night, we sat and ate as a family. We haven't done that in almost four years.

I smile. My mother looks so happy. They haven't been this happy in forever.

Maybe things will be different this time.
