☆ 03: hurt

she kicks off her shoes, lightly slamming the door behind her. she's drenched, but it was the least of her worries.

walking into the bathroom, she stares at her reflection in the mirror. her hands clutch the edge of the sink, knuckles turning almost white with how tight she gripped the sink. observing her puffy eyes and tear-stricken face, she sees her hair a soaking wet mess.

but none of that mattered, as the empty, hollow feeling that pierced through her chest was unavoidable.

her heart ached with pain, and it was a feeling that wouldn't go away. even after spending the next hour washing up, the dull feeling still lingered somewhere inside her.

she sighed deeply as she climbed into bed, shoulders slouched over her bed frame. the conversation with sunoo replayed in her mind over and over again like a broken radio.

she didn't know how to stop thinking.

she couldn't stop thinking.

she may never, ever see him again.

yet, she still chose to run away from him.

why? lee eunhye, why? why did you do this? you knew he was leaving, and yet, you chose to run away from the truth.

heartache washed over her, and the guilt left a lasting stung.

she slowly got up and swept the curtains to the side, discreetly peeking out of her window into her neighbour's room.

the neighbour happened to be staring out of his window too, and he seemed to be deep in thought, looking down at the tiny specks of people walking on the pavement below. he shifted his gaze to the window opposite, locking eyes with eunhye. his eyes looked... hurt.

eunhye quickly closed the curtain, before attacking her mattress, eventually deciding to hide under the covers out of embarrassment.

she got caught.

at that moment, her phone chimes with a notification. she carefully picks up her phone... only to see a message from...

sunoo.

sunoo ❤️
you're avoiding me. did i do smth wrong? you know you can tell me anyth...

eunhye couldn't bring herself to type anything. she merely scanned the contents of the message, pretending she was ignorant. her body thought otherwise, as the grip on her phone was tight enough to almost break it.

stupidly, she thought it was better to say nothing than say something at all.

what's the point when he's leaving soon?

i don't want to be a burden.

and it wasn't like they would coincidentally meet each other again when they would be continents apart.

she slammed her head onto her pillow out of frustration, angry at the world for doing this to her. how dare they separate her and sunoo. how dare they ruin such a strong, beautiful friendship between two best friends.

two soulmates.

D-DAY OF SUNOO'S DEPARTURE

eunhye slumped on the couch, watching la la land with a blank expression on her face. she didn't register anything happening in the movie.

she had spent the whole week cooped up at home,  wasting the time away watching shows she knew she herself wasn't fully invested in.

god, she was in an awful state.

on the tv, the ending scene of tense eye contact between mia and sebastian plays, mia & sebastian's theme playing in the background.

at that moment, sounds of a car outside her house pull over. she could make out muffled noises.

she curiously gets to her doorstep, slightly opening the door to see the commotion.

her heart instantly drops.

a pair of soft, hurt eyes stare back at hers, and then they disappear into the car.

on the last day of spring break, at 11.06am, she had lost him.

forever.
