Chapter 2
I finished off packing all of my things, and crossed off all the items on my checklist. I looked around my room once more, it looked so bare-almost like the day we moved into this house. I glanced over to my closet door, that had all the pictures of me and my friends and-or-family on it. My room was your stereotypical teenager girl's room, lavender walls, wooden floor, double bed-by the window of course. The window had one of those sills that you can sit on, I remember sitting there all the time on a rainy day to read a book, it was one of the most relaxing things about this room. I went over to my study desk were I pencilled my first crushes' name 'Dylan Crook', he wasn't the most popular guy in school, he wasn't considered special by others, but for some reason, he was special to me. I let out an inward sigh, before licking the tip of my thumb and rubbing his name off, he turned out to be a huge idiot and bragged about how many girls he'd slept with to his friends, to me, that isn't a man and then Nate Stewart joined our school, that was a different story-but he never saw me the same way he saw the girls that he went for-so we left high school as friends.
"Now Rhoz, have you got everything you need? Passport, tickets, visa, money and stuff?" My mother asked, as she came strolling into my room with my jacket in her hands. I took it from her and pulled it on. My mother was always one to worry about her babies, I sighed inwardly before going over to my suitcase and putting the little padlock on it.
'Yes, Mother!' I insisted in the sweetest voice I could possibly bring up. 'I wish you would stop fussing,' I put my converses on and tied the laces; these shoes seemed so convenient, seeing as I would be walking around in the airport a lot.
I know, sweetie, I'm sorry' Mom frowned, fixing my hair like she always would. 'It's not every day one of your children gets a big break and goes off to another country for God knows how long...' her voice started to trail off, there she goes babbling on and on again.
'I will be back in the holidays before you've even gotten used to the face that I'm gone' I explained, standing up and pulling my suitcase off of the bed. 'It's only ten weeks away, just think of it as me going away for ten days and not weeks then maybe you might be able to cope without me'
'I don't think, I'll ever get used to not having a little girl running about in the house' Mum smiled, putting her hands on my cheek and looking at me. 'I just cannot believe all my babies are growing up so quickly-you're eighteen and going of to the States for university, Dartmouth is just amazing!
'C'mon, Rhoz!-I don't want you to miss your flight!' My older brother, Jake, called from downstairs. 'If it's mum that's keeping you, tell her you're only popping to the shops!'
'Oh, shush-you!' Mum giggled, wiping away her tears and smiling at me once more before picking up one of my many suitcases and leaving my room. I grabbed my other suitcase and followed her down the stairs, following her instructions to be careful and mind my step. We went out onto the driveway where my father was already busy trying to fit my trunk into his Peugeot Verve, unfortunately in the process all his fingers are being crushed with alternative words escaping his mouth!
'Judging by the weight of this bloody trunk, Rhoz is taking her whole room with her' Dad panted, after he successfully got the trunk into the boot of his car, once he spotted my mother and I, he groaned and said. 'Don't tell me there's more, Rhoz, are you sure you're not planning on bringing the plane down with all your luggage?'
'You can never be under prepared, Dad!' I laughed, putting my suitcase in the boot. 'This isn't even half of my belongings, the moment I get settled in, I'm going straight to the shopping center to get some more'
'I feel sorry for whoever has to help you carry those up to your dorm room' my older sister Poppy, sighed as she shook her head at me. At, twenty-six, Poppy was the oldest out of all of us, she had a fiancé and they lived in a flat together, as for my brother-who was twenty-four, he did have a girlfriend but he didn't want to use that as an excuse to move out-no matter how much she pleaded with him for them to get a place of their own. My brother would always argue that there's no place like home where a mother cooks good food and washes clothes for free-I didn't blame him.
Getting into the car, with everybody strapped in, I had a daunting feeling of reality hit me as the Dad drove out of the drive way it was as if the more we drove away, the more I was leaving my past behind, the old me. Even though I promised Mum I would be returning home in a few months, I felt like I wouldn't be returning home for the same reasons as I am thinking now, I'd probably be too busy to visit them and I'd end up losing contact with them-that was something I feared the most.
I love my existence but going to university is supposed to be a giant adventure, with some experiences turning out bad, and some turning out so great most think it is surreal. Could this really be the last time I will ever see my family? I hope not, but what about if I fell in love with a sparkly vampire or werewolf like out of Twilight? As a teenager I had always dreamed of marrying a werewolf but do they even exist? I guess there is only one way to find out… Hunt them down! Okay I know that you are now thinking I am a seriously demented person but don’t you dream of marrying and loving a furry wolf? See I told you they are pretty fit!
**********
When we arrived at the airport, Poppy and Jake helped each other to get my entire luggage out of the boot, in the meantime my mother and father went with me inside the airport so I could check-in. Poppy and Jake came in with my luggage. I turned to face my family members, they were all smiling proudly at me, I don't blame them-my high school years didn't actually make my university application possible. Mom was the first to step forward and pull me into a bone crushing hug; Dad came into the hug too, kissing the top of my head as he did so. 'Take care of yourself, sweetie...' Mom sniffled into my jacket, before letting me go and going over to my brother and sister.
Poppy came over and pulled me into a hug, almost knocking me off of my feet. 'You go out there and make us all proud, I know you can do it' Poppy whispered into my ear before kissing my cheek and going over to my family, next, was Jake. He lifted me up and spun me around, before setting me on my feet again, he used his thumbs to wipe my tears away-was I crying?-He pecked my forehead before saying, 'If a guy approaches you and offers you weed, say no-okay?' I stifled a laugh as my tears were preventing me from doing so.
Dad came over and hugged me before pulling away and kissing the top of my head. 'Now you go, and you make yourself that best that you can be-don't forget to believe in yourself, because we all believe in you' I nodded and grinned, Dad handed the trolley that had all of my suitcases on over to me and I took it, turning my back on my family and starting to push it towards the waiting area. I turned around once more, looking at the people who made me who I am, today; they all put on brave smiles.
I clamped my hand over my mouth so that the sobs would come out and the tears would just fall. 'Bye, Mom, Dad-Poppy and Jake' I croaked as the warm tears started to spill. To make the scene less emotional I said. 'Pray for me-that I won't get seated next to any snoring grannies on the plane!'
They all burst into a fit of laughter, Dad jokingly added.’ Give them a good nudge, if you do end up next to one, won't you?' I nodded and grinned. 'Give your mother a ring as soon as you land, you know how she worries about you!-It's a big thing for us all'
'Darling, if you ever need us or you want to come home, we will be just a call away and six hours ahead of you!' Mother shouted out, through her silent sobs. I chewed on my bottom lip and nodded slowly at her. I stared at my family for a long time, wishing I could pack them into my suitcase and take them with me. I started to wave at them and they all waved back in unison. Making us all jump, with only a few seconds left to spare together; as the hostess called over the speaker" Last call for all passengers traveling on the flight AA137X at 15:34. Please make your way to Gate 34."
'Um... I better get going, can't miss my plane can I' I grinned, as I started to push my trolley.
'Bye Rhoz, take care and have fun!' Poppy waved, grinning at me.
'Bye, love you all so much' I croaked, pushing the trolley towards the gate.
As I turned around for the last time to wave back at them a smile crept across their faces and they waved once more before a group of screaming teenagers hurried past them, making it impossible for me to see. I took this as a sign that I should start heading towards the gate, the gate that would start everything. I beamed to myself, knowing that I was one more step towards fulfilling my dream!
