Eryn Daniels was known as a lot of things to the student body at Cyprus Park High.  But 'genocide survivor' certainly wasn't one of them.  The rumors of what could have happened spread like spilled water as soon as he showed up to school looking like a sleep-deprived, anxious mess.  Unlike his normal social self, he was much more closed-off and guarded, avoiding eye contact and only speaking if spoken to.  People had assumed he had gotten into a rocky situation with either his current romantic partner or his father.  Nobody expected what he told the school counselor to be anywhere close to the truth.

Word got around real fast that Eryn had, alongside a group of students in detention, gotten kidnapped by their substitute teacher and forced to answer trivia questions in a desperate fight for survival.  It certainly explained the sudden disappearances of the other seven students, but the story he told the counselor was so absurd and got him so worked up that by the time the school bell rang that day, Eryn was already being checked into the psychiatric ward.

The school counselor, Dr. Maria Rogers, couldn't fall asleep that night.  She tried reading a book and watching tv, but nothing could remove Eryn's voice from her head.

"Eryn, please talk to me."

"I can't."

"Why not?"

"Because you won't believe me.  Promise me you'll believe me."

"I'm sure I'll believe you, Eryn."

"Okay.  Well, yesterday, I was in detention with, um, Gabriella Roux, Maddie Peters, Kat Sachs, Cody Crenshaw, Tyler Lawson, Sasha Richardson, and Nathan Young... This substitute teacher, uh, Mr. Myrrh, came in and took attendance, but he used some machine to knock us all out and kidnap us.  I woke up in a dark hallway with everyone, and Mr. Myrrh introduced himself as [REDACTED] and told us that we'd have to answer trivia or die.  I watched almost everyone die, and then I died, but I managed to regain my life force in the final round, and I managed to find my way home eventually."

"That... that's quite a story."

"I know it sounds crazy, but it's real.  I- I can probably figure out where he took us, I remember the street name-"

"Excuse me for a moment."

She'd called up the office and asked about a Mr. Myrrh.  There was no Mr. Myrrh in their system.  And there were no cameras inside of the classrooms, either, so there was no physical proof that such a man existed.  She took a deep breath and made another call before returning to Eryn.

"Come with me, we're going to figure out who this man is.  We're going to the authorities."

They'd gotten in her car, and she began to drive.  Thankfully, Eryn had seemed so distant that he didn't realize where she'd taken him until they entered the building.

"Dr. Rogers?" the man at the front desk had asked.

"That's me, and this is Eryn."

She'd been holding Eryn's arm, bracing herself for the moment he realized what was happening.  And that moment still had taken her by surprise.

"Wh-what?!  Dr. Rogers, you think I made it up?  Do you think I'm crazy?  I know what I saw!  It's real, I swear!"

He'd tried breaking free of her grip, but two nurses had hurried over to help restrain him.

"I'M NOT CRAZY, I SWEAR!  IT WAS REAL, I SAW THEM ALL DIE!  YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE ME, PLEASE!  PLEASE!"

Dr. Rogers steadied her breathing as she slowly sipped her tea.  Eryn's screams wouldn't be leaving her mind anytime soon, no matter how much she tried to block it out.  She leaned back into her pillow, letting her dark hair fall in her face.  She reached for the TV remote and changed the channel.  The news flickered to life on the screen.

"Yesterday evening, eight high schoolers at Cyprus Park High were reported as missing when they never returned home after detention," a reporter was saying.

Dr. Rogers quickly turned the TV off.  She couldn't bring herself to think any more about what was happening.  She slid out of bed and went to fetch some melatonin so she had a shot at falling asleep.  She approached the kitchen and immediately sensed that something was off.  She flicked on the light and immediately screamed.

Slumped against the wall beneath the window was her husband Randall, blood pooling next to him and a kitchen knife in his chest.  Above him, smeared on the window in red were words.

ERYN WAS RIGHT

Dr. Rogers reached for the landline, her heart beating in her chest, but before she could grab it, she blacked out.
