A/N: I strongly advise you to go back and re-read chapter one of the first book, "The Beginning of the End." If you don't, you will literally have no idea what's going to happen in this prologue, and the following chapter. And by the way, this is a flash back. Happy reading!

Carter's POV

The deed was done. It was too late.

There was no going back.

I stared at the body, my palms balled up into fists and my chest heaving up and down with every shaky breath I took. Did I just do what I thought I did? I didn't know. I didn't want to know.

My heart was beating painfully inside my chest. With nimble, cold fingers, I placed the deadly weapon back underneath the waistband of my jeans. The cold metal touched the skin on my hip briefly, sending a wave of goosebumps through my body.

I wasn't aware of my surroundings. What was there to be aware of? It was late into the night. The only thing that accompanied me was the eerie, light fog that hung around, watching. Waiting.

The air was still. As still as a vacuum. To the point where I could hear the blood being pumped around my body by a frantic, rapid heart. To the point where I could hear every shift, every creak and every noise that my body made. To the point where I could hear my shallow, frightened breathing. It drove me insane.

I glanced at the body one more time. Still. Stiff. Lifeless.

It was over.

My mission was over.
