The sun beamed over the large fields of corn and wheat, creating a golden glow in the sky. In the center, a small red wooden house with a tree in the front yard with an old tire tied to the branches, and on the swing sat a pale-skinned girl with long blonde hair and bright blue eyes; she sat under the tree staring out into the fields feeling as the wind blew through her long golden hair when suddenly a female voice shouts from the house "HANNAH!! FOODS READY!!" the voice shouted Hannah sighed lightly and jumped off the swing "COMING!!" she shouted back Hannah shuffled her way up to the house, Hannah didn't have much in common with her family. Hannah walks through the doorway. A woman stands in the kitchen with long brown peppered hair. "What were you saying, Mom?" Hannah asks her Mom looks at her. "Food is ready; go set the table with your brother," she responds. Hannah sighed again and walked into the dining room where her brother Reese was struggling to put the tablecloth on; Reese is Hannah's younger brother; he has short brown hair and hazel eyes; Hannah grabbed the other end of the cloth and dragged it to the other side of the table "Thanks." he says Hannah nods and continues setting the table tossing plates and silverware on the table. At the same time, Reese placed them. "Oh, by the way, we will need a fourth set," Reese adds. Hannah looks at Reese with a confused look on her face. "Oh, did Mom not tell you..." He is interrupted by their mother with bowls of pasta and burgers. "Foods here," she says to Hannah. Still looking at Reese with confusion, she turns to her Mom. "Why do we need a fourth plate?" she asks again. "Oh, that's right, I forgot to tell you."
"Tell me what?" Hannah asks once again. "Well, Reese's friend Ethan is moving into the town, so I was kind enough to offer him a place to sleep until then." Hannah's face drops. "WHAT!!" she shouts. "It's only for a few days, just until he can set up his place," she says. Hannah looks at her mother with a twitchy eye as her stress level rises more and more, but suddenly her face drops as a knock at the door sounds. "That must be him now, please Hannah be nice Im serious," she says with a bold look. "But he's just so weird," she adds. Reese rolls his eyes. "Why do you have to be so mean to him? He's never done anything wrong," Reese exclaims. Hannah's Mom walks to the door. "You two shut up and stop fighting," she sternly whispers, swinging the door open. Hannah's Mom's face lights up excitedly as she embraces the faceless guest.
"Ethan, it's so good to have you here. Come in and sit; we were just about to start eating," she says. Ethan steps out of the doorway and walks into the house; Ethan is a tall, skinny boy with short blonde hair, bright silvery eyes, and a silver chain with a small metal coin dangling just under his collar and a large duffle bag hocked over his shoulder. Ethan and Reese both release a loud
"MY BROTHER!" as they embrace in a brotherly hug, the large duffle bag hits the floor like a shit ton of bricks, creating a loud *THUMP*. "I missed ya, man," Reese says. "I missed ya too," Ethan replies. Hannah sees a small tear resting on Reese's shoulder; Ethan looks at Hannah and gives her a nod "Hannah," he says. Hannah shrugs off Ethan and sits at the table, ignoring anything he has to say to her. Ethan and Reese share glances before they join her at the dinner table, and her mother sits at the head of the table. "Hope everyone is hungry; there is a lot of food," she says. Reese and Ethan have no problem digging into the pasta; the thick red sauce drips from their faces without a care that the food has just been cooked and is still steaming hot as Hannah cuts her burger in half, making it easier to eat. Still, the boys didn't want easy to eat; they wanted food. "So Ethan, tell us, how have you been recently?" Mom asks; Ethan wipes the food from his face and gulps down the food in his mouth. "Well, I've been fine. You know my parents are..." he stops for a moment and looks at the plate in front of him, then looks back."... away on holiday, so it's nice to have some time without them." he finishes.
Hannah looks at him oddly but shrugs it off. "Well, it's always good to get alone time once in a while, besides you and Reese haven't seen each other since school, so it's nice for you two to reconnect." Mom adds. Reese grabs Ethan's shoulder, giving it a shake. "Always glad to have you here," Reese says. Ethan smiles and continues eating while Hannah stares at Ethan with a sense that Ethan is not telling the whole truth. The family finished eating and gathered in the kitchen to help clean up; the sun peaked through the window above the sink, sending an orange glow and filling the room as the sun fell under the horizon. "Oh my god Im STUFFED" Reese groans as he sits in a chair in the corner of the room. Ethan nods his head as he lies next to him on the floor. "Maybe you guys shouldn't have eaten the entire 2 lbs of pasta and six burgers." Mom adds, "But it was so worth it." Reese responds, "Hell ya, it was." Ethan groans quietly. Hannah chuckled lightly, which caused Ethan's head to shoot up off the ground and look at her Hannah realized what had happened and returned to cleaning. Ethan squinted at Hannah with suspicion. Hannah's Mom finishes with the dishes and looks at Reese. "Hey, Reese, how about you show Ethan where he will be sleeping," she says. Reese knocks Ethan on the shoulder.
"She's right; let's go," he grumbles as he stands from the chair a large releasing a loud squeal. Ethan stands with him with low whines of pain. Ethan and Reese stumble down a narrow hallway; Reese kicks open the door at the end of the hall. "HERES OUR ROOM, BROTHA!!" he shouts. Hannah shakes her head lightly. Hannah and her Mom finish cleaning up from dinner when she suddenly asks, "Why do you hate Ethan so much?" she asks Hannah's face goes blank " I don't hate Ethan." she snaps. Hannah's Mom gives a crooked look. "Then why are you always so mean to him, even when he is nice? You either ignore or are rude to him; why is that?" her Mom asked. Hannah's face remains blank while she thinks, but nothing ever comes to mind; it seems to Hannah all the hatred was purely for nothing. Hannah and her mother argued for almost an hour before Hannah stormed off to her room. At the same time, her mother remains in the kitchen, angry with Hannah but also sad and disappointed, feeling she raised her daughter to be rude and selfish; sadness overwhelmed her, and two small tears fall from her eyes. Instead of crying, she sucks up the tears, wipes the sadness from her eyes, walks to her room, lies in her bed, and sleeps. The sun disappears behind fields of wheat and corn, and the sky is dazzled with stars; the darkness of the night covers the small house with only the sound of the two best friends being loud and obnoxious as they rekindle the friendship that had been lost.
