"What are you doing?" I hissed at my best friend Will," Are you stupid? Do you WANT to die!?"
"I won't get caught if you keep your mouth shut!" Will whisper-shouted back.
Yep, this is my life. I'm human, I'm proud to say and we spend our whole lives locked up in these cages where the fae come and stare and laugh at us. I'm a girl and my name is Rowan. I'm also 16 years old. Right now, my best friend Will is trying to get out of the cages. It's night time so everyone in our cage is asleep. But even if he does get out, no-ones ever gotten past the guards.
I shake my head,"Then I'm coming with you."
I stand up and grab Will, pushing him away from the door. Faerie magic doesn't work on me, I don't know why. I put all my weight into pushing the door open. If anyone else tried this, they would get zapped and the fae would be alerted.I'm quite slim but I'm also very strong, being trapped in a cage all your life kind of makes sure you don't get fat or weak.
The heavy iron door slowly opens and Will and I quickly slip out. I don't feel guilty about leaving the rest of the humans behind, because I don't really know anyone else. My identical twin sister got taken away ages ago...but I try not to remember that. Anyway, we'll probably end up coming back. No-one ever escapes.
Will and I hide behind a marble pillar as two fae guards walk past us, on night time patrol. Fae are beautiful. They look almost exactly like humans except for the pointy tips on their ears and their eyes are completely black. They are symmetrical which is the main reason they look so attractive. Also hundreds of years ago the fae made a rule; any ugly child, human or fae, would be killed before the age of 13. Before they'd get the chance to reproduce.
Which is why the humans are so beautiful as well.
I crash into Will's back and I realise he's stopped walking.
"Could've warned me," I muttered.
Will just shakes his head silently and puts his finger to his lips. I strain my ears and hear nothing.
"Will," I begin," It was probably just-"
And then I hear it. Hundreds of footsteps and trumpets signalling the arrival of the royal family.
Oh dammit!
If we get caught we would be tortured before being put back in our cages. Sometimes it could even be death by whipping. We run. Sprinting down the hall.
'Hide' I mouth at Will. We had no time to get back to the cages. He nods. Will scrambles up a pole and onto a small platform containing crates. There's no room up there for me. So I scan the room for another hiding place. I can't see anything. I look around frantically and catch Will's eye.
'Hurry!' he mouths at me.
I then see it. A wardrobe, and with my slim figure I step inside and close the door just as I hear the footsteps enter the room. I sigh in relief, there's hardly any room in this wardrobe. Only enough for me to stand upright. I shuffle to the left and freeze. There's somebody else in this wardrobe with me.
I turn my head to the left and squint, trying to see who it was. In the darkness of the wardrobe and the light coming in from under the door I can just make out who it is...
Ah hell!
It's the fae prince!
