"Alex, it's okay," Maria said softly, stroking his beautifully brown hair. He'd gotten frustrated with his family, although they were only doing their typical shenanigans.

"No, it's not!" He huffed, putting his face in his hands. "I don't understand why people can't just mind their own business." He spoke, his voice muffled by his hands.

"They're just curious, that's all." She shrugged, continuing to rub his back.

"You're just too nice." He sighed, pulling his face out of his hands. Maria frowned, she'd heard many people tell her those same words. "You just ask them to stop, and if they continue, you don't say a thing." Seeing how much she was frowning made him sigh and realize what he'd said. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay, I know you're frustrated." She spoke reassuringly, looking at him with wide and sympathetic eyes. He sighed again, shifting slightly to see her better.

"I don't understand why people can't just shut up about it, ya know?" She nodded along as he spoke. "It's not their business, so why are they talking about it?" Maria shrugged, glancing away from him.

"They're just curious, that's all." Alex scoffed, he couldn't believe it. She was playing it off like it was nothing. He knew it bothered her when people brought it up, she was just too nice to tell them to shut the fuck up.

"I can't believe how calm you are about this." He shook his head in disbelief. "It didn't even happen to me and it still pisses me off that people think it's cool to bring it up." She twisted the rings on her fingers, glancing up at him for a moment.

"I mean..." She gulped, "I guess I just don't want to be mean. I mean, I know when they bring it up that they're being mean but...I just..." She sighed, she couldn't explain it. Someone could be an absolute shithead to her, and she wouldn't say a thing to them.

"I know you're not confrontational." He sighed, while Maria began to rub his back again.

"Just don't worry about it," She said softly, "it doesn't really bother me so you don't have to worry about it." She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him into a hug. Alex couldn't understand how she could just tell him to stop worrying about people bringing up what happened to Maria, but she asked him to do it. So, he would do it.

Alex and Maria were beyond excited to go on a field trip to the observatory. Well, Maria was more excited than Alex, but seeing Maria happy made him happy. Maria and Alex were looking at an exhibit when another class from another school clambered beside them. Maria didn't think much of it until she felt someone tap her shoulder.

"You're Maria Perez, right?" The boy asked, snickering as he glanced back at his friends. Alex looked between the two, his shoulders stiffening as his jaw clenched.

"Yes..." She replied hesitantly, glancing up at Alex and then at the boy who'd tapped her shoulder. She didn't know him, but it was obvious he knew her. Or knew something about her.

"So you're the girl that fucked her own dad." He said, chuckling. Maria gulped, all color draining from her face. Quickly, Alex wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
