SAGE MICHAELS

when making sages playlist, i knew i wanted to make sure i was able to show exactly who she is through songs that aren't simply glee covers or show tunes like my last sage playlist that said nothing about her. i also share some headcanons that made me chose the song and that the songs made me give sage. majority of these are hs au with most of dorothea being an exception.

TRACK ONE: PINK IN THE NIGHT BY MITSKI

this song just has sage's energy in it to me. sage has only officially been with one person before and the relationship didn't end how she wishes it did. she spent months trying to get over them, thinking they'd eventually come back to her. lyrics like "i didn't do it right, can i try again?" showcase sages inability to let things rest.

TRACK TWO: FAMILY LINE BY CONAN GRAY

a bit self explanatory if you know this song, but sage has familial issues (especially on the father side of it all) so this song felt appropriate to me for a song to give to sage as a way to explain how she feels and the situation in a way. sage has only grown more aware of the issues her family had/has as shes grown older. being only eight when her parents divorced, sage thought it must've been something she had done. now she knows that her father is not the same one she grew up missing and loving. she sees her dad being able to grow from who he was when he was with her mom and wonders why she couldn't get what her sister has now and why he couldn't love her mom the way he loves her step mom.

-

TRACK THREE: DOROTHEA BY TAYLOR SWIFT

little miss sage was always destined to be a star. she'll always have love for pennsylvania but she knew she wasn't meant to stay there forever and neither was her mom. after moving to l.a, sage knew this is exactly where her mom needed to be and she was happy to stay there for her formative years. this song is from the point of view of a person talking to/about a person they used to be very close to but fate has brought one to bigger things while the other stays behind their hometown. intially i had it in my mind that the chorus of this song ("its never too late to come back to my side") would for sure be sage and her outlook on friends and everything, but upon closer analyzstion, sage is dorothea. sage can't be contained to a city in pennsylvania, she was destined for places like l.a and new york and that means leaving behind loved ones and saying hello to new friends.

-

TRACK FOUR: KYOTO BY PHOEBE BRIDGERS

sage's dad tries and fails miserably at staying in touch with her. sage wants there to be a connection between the two of them but it's a struggle for her ("i don't forgive you, but please don't hold me to it"). she has only visted him and his family once since moving away from pennsylvania and it was an uncomfortable experience for her, because apart of her felt like she was reliving her childhood and the other part felt as though the whole experience was making up for it.

-

TRACK FIVE: HAPPY BY MARINA

this song is about overcoming obstacles and being able to finally reach a place where you are content with your life and where you are. this song screams sages entire character arc to me to be honest. not much to say here, sorry!

-

TRACK SIX: BETTER THAN REVENGE BY TAYLOR SWIFT

sage and a certain girl she knows aren't the friendliest to each other. they've been that way for a long time and at this point, that'll never change. both girls are petty and hold grudges. the difference is sage keeps information in her back pocket and waits for the perfect moment for confrontation. the other girl? not so much. their personalities clash and the other girl often takes things too far. i chose this song to relate to the conflict between these two girls (viewed from sages perspective) because i feel like it sums up sages opinion on the girl well; mainly the line "she's not saint and she's not what you think, she's an actress".

-

TRACK SEVEN: TELL ME WHY BY TAYLOR SWIFT

once again, sage and the other girl. this is sort of a more mature view on sage and the other girl's relationship. while better than revenge showcases a more catty side to sage and how she feels about the other girl, tell me why shows sage being confused on what even is going on and being a bit fed up with this dynamic ("i'm sick and tired of your attitude"). there's also like other implications that this song has in my mind for the two girls, but i'm keeping that to myself haha.

-

TRACK EIGHT: FRANCIS FOREVER BY MITSKI

this song means a lot to me (like A LOT) so giving it to sage meant a lot. this song somewhat goes with sage's entire life. sage is very appreciative of what being in the spotlight has given her, but she's also aware of what its taken away from her and what she'll never have because of it ("i don't need the world to see that i've been the best i can be"). i can just invision this songs chorus with sage and her general outlook on a lot of things.

-

TRACK NINE: BETTER MAN BY TAYLOR SWIFT

omg another song about sage's dad!! the lyrics are quite self explanatory and i don't want to bore you guys with more of sages family issues lmao

-

TRACK TEN: ARE YOU SATISFIED BY MARINA

sage is an overachiever who has known what she wants her future to look like since she was young. nothing can stop her when she's passionate about something or in charge. this is another song that i feel like can sum her up as a character.

-

TRACK ELEVEN: OURS BY TAYLOR SWIFT

this is sage's outlook on love. when she loves someone truly, she will be there through thick and thin and despite what others say (not always good for her..especially with her last relationship). i'm not even gonna mention why sage can be a bit delulu/picky when it comes to men because just reread this whole thing lolol. (sages fc also influenced this because of an edit of her to it so like this just makes sense to me)
