I will always remember the first time I went to a Grand Prix, the year after I had started karting. We had travelled an hour and a half to get to the Silverstone circuit on Thursday and we stayed in a hotel nearby. I will never forget the bubbling excitement I felt that night which was the cause of my lack of sleep, sorry dad!
I scoffed down my hotel breakfast so we could get to the track as soon as possible. Unfortunately, this meant that our wake up was stupid early. Either way, my dad and I powered through the Friday before passing out straight after stepping through the door of our hotel room.
We got to the track at opening time again, the excitement from before returning with even more power, I couldn't sit still while waiting for qualifying.
After what felt like an eternity, I saw the cars lining up to leave the pit lane. I was constantly on the edge of my seat while watching.
Near the end of Q1, Anthony Davidson spun creating a yellow flag. This led to Sato and Button having to slow down on their flying lap and consequently being eliminated alongside Albers, Sutil, Davidson, and Rosberg.
An uneventful Q2 took place, however my anticipation didn't waiver. After 15 minutes, the drivers eliminated were Liuzzi, Speed, Barrichello, Wurz, Coulthard, and Webber.
Session 3 provided a battle between Alonso and Räikkönen for pole position. Alonso initially looking like the pole sitter before a late lap from Räikkönen which left him at the top. Hamilton wasn't looking competitive from P4 however during his final lap he managed to climb up to pole after crossing the line with a few seconds left in the session. Safe to say it was an exciting session.
My dad and I left the track immediately after qualifying to go and swim at the pool in the hotel. I wasn't and still aren't a great swimmer but still enjoy it nonetheless. We retreated back up to the hotel room to freshen up before heading to Pizza Express for dinner.
When we came back, my dad told me he had a surprise for me. I waited patiently as he went to get my present. A Ferrari cap that I could wear to the race tomorrow, and my favourite, a beige teddy bear with a Ferrari shirt on. After much thinking, I decided on the name 'Oscar' for my new bear. A name that fit him perfectly.
That night, I had Oscar tucked under my arm and started snoring mere minutes after closing my eyes.
The loud blare coming from my dad's alarm was shocking in the morning. It took me a minute to register the eagerness I had for todays events. I immediately jumped out of bed, a decision I would come to regret at the dizziness I felt soon after. We got ready speedily and headed to the track.
It was the easily the busiest day of the weekend, and I couldn't help but feel slightly intimidated by the size of those around me.
The intimidation turned to panic as I realised my dad had gone missing. I didn't know what to do and I just froze, tears streaming down my cheeks like waterfalls.
Thankfully, some kind of member of staff found me quick and took me to the side to get away from the hustle and bustle and figure out what is wrong.
He asked my name and then my dad's and where we were sitting in the grandstand. He seemed to be in a rush by the speed at which we were moving to the seating area. Luckily, we found my dad talking to a different member of staff looking extremely worried. We made eye contact and he immediately sprinted over and wrapped me in his arms.
He had a brief conversation with my saviour which I couldn't quite make out due to my relief at being found but afterwards he seemed quite starstruck and shocked.
Anyway, we got into our seats to chill for a bit before the race began. I was sat there with my Ferrari cap on, Oscar in my lap, and a smile so big that my jaw was throbbing.
After a long wait, the race finally began.
Hamilton led the first few laps before eventually being overtaken by Räikkönen after his pit stop.
Räikkönen continued to lead even after his box. This didn't last long however as Alonso managed a great pit stop soon after which left him leading the race. Although, his tires began wearing quickly which meant an unfortunate early pitstop, leaving him in P2 and allowing Räikkönen into P1.
This is how the race was finished, with the final step being occupied by Hamilton. My dad scooped me up and began running towards the podium for the ceremony. We didn't get particularly close but we were still able to see the celebrations take place.
After a long day, we retreated to the car where I slept the whole way back home. It was the perfect ending to one of the best weekend of my life. My little, seven-year-old heart could not be more full.
