After falling into the net I’ve learned three things. One, the lady that asked for my name is Alyssa. Two, she will be our instructor. Three, the Dauntless compound was extremely interesting.
Ethan, the Dauntless-Born instructor, has just taken the other initiates to who-knows-where and has left the remaining of us with Alyssa. I scan the room and take a quick head count. There are only 9 of us left, which means only 8 transfers. Judging by the clothes everyone is wearing, I notice there are four transfers from Candor, one from Amity and three from Erudite, including me. I was surprised to see a member of Amity in the room but, hey, she must have a reason. Alyssa begins to introduce herself as our instructor and we begin to walk down a narrow tunnel towards a large set of double doors.
“Behind these doors is the Pit, which is the place you might spend most of your time in.” She says, backing up and opening the doors. As soon as I get the full view of the pit I am in awe. It is ginormous and I can’t keep my eyes still. I feel like I have to absorb every detail in this exact moment.
It is an underground cavern so huge I can’t see the other end of it from where I stand, at the bottom. Uneven rock walls rise several stories above my head. Built into the stone walls are places for food, clothing, supplies, and leisure activities. Narrow paths and steps carved from rocks connect them. There are no barriers to keep people from falling over the side. (Description of pit taken from the book)
I notice the people spread around the pit, all wearing black. They seem so free of worry and rules.
Alyssa gives us a moment to examine the area before we start moving again.
“Please follow me everyone, I’m going to show you the chasm.”
After being blown away by viewing the deep, dangerous chasm Alyssa leads us into a large room which I come to realize is the dining hall. When we enter the Dauntless inside greet us with cheers and applauses and we begin to spread around the room in search of empty seats. I notice how the initiates from Candor stick together like glue; they even found a table to themselves. I walk with Terra and Jake to the far end of the room where I notice a few empty seats, next to them, are the Dauntless-Born. I sneak a glance at Terra and she shrugs. I guess we found our seats for the day, it was better than sitting on the floor.
When we make our way to the table, it’s clear that it’s already occupied by three Dauntless-Born, one of which is Ian.
“Mind if we sit here?” Terra asks.
The boy sitting next to Ian shook his head because of his already stuffed mouth.
For some reason I felt shy and intimidated by the Dauntless-Born and reluctantly took a seat between Terra and Ian. There was also a girl at the table. She had dirty-blonde hair that reached a little above her shoulders and small freckles scattered across her noise. I didn’t recognize her or the other boy sitting to Ian’s left.
“Aren’t you gonna eat?” Ian asks. I snap out my thoughts and look up to see Ian pushing forward a plate of hamburgers. I take one and put it in my plate then reached over to grab the ketchup.
“So what are your names?” Asks the girl.
“I’m Jake.” Jake says before taking a bite out of his burger.
“Terra.” Says Terra, raising her hand a bit. “And this is Spencer.” She says pointing at me. I give them a closed mouth smile.
“Cool, my name’s Alice.” Says the girl. “And that’s Cory, but you can also call him ‘The Food Vacuum.’” She says, pointing over at Cory who is in the middle of chewing his burger.
Cory gives a sarcastic smile to Alice before swallowing.
“And I’m Ian.” Says Ian. I look over at him and he greets us with a smile.
“Hey, Spence, can you pass the ketchup please.” Jake says in between the sips of his drink.
“Sure.” I reach over to grab the ketchup bottle when all of a sudden my arm knocks my drink to the side creating a flood of water. What a great way to start off I think to myself sarcastically. I feel a flush of heat fill my cheeks as the others notice my embarrassing mistake.
Instead of facing the embarrassment, I quickly get out of my seat and make my way towards a table with napkins. I grab a few and head back to the table.
I set the napkins on our table and sit down, well, at least I thought I was going to sit down… When my chair suddenly disappears from under me and I land on my butt. I look up to see a satisfied Terra laughing along with the others.
Next thing I know, I see shoes next to me, and when I look up, to my surprise, I see Ian holding a hand out with a small smile. I grab on to his hand and he lifts me half way up when he lets go causing me to fall back on my butt. Once again, laughter fills my ears. This just adds to my lovely way of starting off initiation.
He then makes his way back to his chair when suddenly he turns back holding his hand out again. I don’t move. I don’t trust him. Why should I? He says quietly almost as faint as a whisper, “C’mon, I’m not that mean.” He looks into my eyes and without hesitation, my hand is in his. This time, he pulls me up, but before going back to his chair, he whispers in my ear, “Might want to eat more hamburgers, you seem lighter than a feather.” I let out a small laugh and sit back down, this time, making sure I land in a chair.
I lift my head up to be facing several eyes concentrated on me. I turn towards Terra hoping for a little support but instead just the opposite. “Someone’s a bit clumsy today.” Laughter follows. Jake taps Terra on the shoulder. She turns around and Jake smears ketchup on her face. “Not cool.” He adds, smirking. This deserves another round of laughter. I hear a grunt come from Jake and it’s obvious Terra has just kicked him from under the table.
Thoughts begin to fill my mind as I start to finish up my burger. The Dauntless may not be so bad after all, but I have to remember what I’m here for. I shouldn’t make friends, that my just make it more difficult than it already is. All I know right now is that I have a lot of thinking to do.
