Cady's POV

"The Prosecution may cross-examine the witness." The Justice says.

"Lydia mentioned that during her visits that you and your Aunt were rather distant. Is this correct?"

"At the beginning yes, absolutely. However that's what you would expect from two people who were thrust into a tragic situation and forced to adjust. But like with any family, we overcame our differences and grew closer together. Right now, I trust her more than anyone." I say.

"You and Gemma said that Megan's only goal was to protect you at all times. Could she have misinterpreted that request easily?"

"No, I don't think so. Megan was never programmed for violence because she not given any information on the topic of death. But due to my circumstances, she had the motive to research and learn about this subject. So, it was by coincidence that she understood what death was, not of Aunt Gemma's doing."

"No further questions your honour."

"You may step down." I nod and rush off the stand back to my seat. Tess gives me a reassuring squeeze on my hand. A few minutes later, I hear the Justice strike his gavel.

"I hereby declare the trial adjourned. Court is adjourned until 9:00 am tomorrow." He says before exiting the room. Once he is out of eye sight, everyone else suddenly stands up and I follow suit. Julia and Aunt Gemma quickly find their way over to us.

"That was amazing Cady, Gemma should be proud." Julia says.

"Thank you."

"It's now up to the jury to decide. We'll find what happens tomorrow. For now, get some rest knowing we did our best." Julia says.

"Regardless of what happens going forward, thank you for everything you've done for my sister and I. I can't tell you how grateful I am." Aunt Gemma says.

"You're welcome. I only did what I was trained to do. It was also the right thing to do. You and Cady are an excellent people and absolutely deserve a second chance. I only hope the judge and the jury see what I see in you two."

"Let us hope. We'll see you tomorrow at 8:45?" Aunt Gemma asks.

"Yes, see you then." Julia says before walking away. We turn around to see Tess and Cole's faces white as a sheet.

"Are you okay?" Aunt Gemma asks.

"You gotta see this." Tess says, turning her phone around for us to see. On the screen was a news article written today and what it read made my heart stop.

"Well, I guess we all need new jobs." Aunt Gemma says.

"Yeah. That'd be a start." Tess says.

"Look, I'm sorry for dragging you two in to this mess and my out burst yesterday. I truly appreciate you always having my back."

"You didn't drag us in to anything. We chose to work with you." Tess says.

"Yeah. So anyways, we'll let you have some time with Cady." Cole jumps in as he drags Tess away. Aunt Gemma chuckles and gives her friends a friendly wave.

"Let's get home, yeah?" I nod and take her hand. We make our way over to our car for the drive back home.

"Hey Cady, I want to say I'm proud of you, and how you handled yourself today." Aunt Gemma says, looking at me through the rearview mirror while she drives.
