As Zander walks to school with Hailey, he pulls on the end of his jacket, trying to make it look relatively nice. Hailey catches him and rolls her eyes.
"Zander, chill out, you'll survive!" Hailey insists, hair swaying in the winter breeze.
Zander sighs, looking away. It turned out that none of his blazers were clean today, so he was left with nothing but a regular jacket in its place, not really helping with the classy look Zander usually tries to pull off. Even worse, the jacket was a bright orange. It clashed horribly with the rest of the outfit, which was a purple, gray, and white color scheme. It also wasn't the soft, sunset orange that so often reminded him of Luke.
In short, he didn't like it.
Suddenly, Luke comes into view and Zander immediately ducks behind Hailey. She sighs, but keeps walking, Zander trying to stay out of sight but obviously failing.
"Hey Hailey! Hi Zander!" Luke greets the two as they approach, before raising an eyebrow as he sees Zander clearly hiding behind Hailey. "Uhm- dear, what are you doing?" He asks, and Zander's cheeks turn pink.
"Zander's trying to hide from you because he's out of- HEY!" Hailey's response is cut short as Zander gives her a light but quick shove to get her to shut up, before realizing he was exposed. Immediately, his face turns red and he looks away, not meeting Luke's eyes.
Luke lets out a small laugh. He had to admit that the orange jacket didn't fit Zander very well, but it was nothing his boyfriend needed to hide for.
"Honey, you look fine," Luke laughs, going to Zander to give him a hug.
"No I don't," Zander grumbles, resting his head on Luke's shoulder.
"Zander. You literally look cute in anything," Luke reassures. Zander's response was a slight grumble as the group got ready to walk the rest of the way to school.
As they approached the school, Zander couldn't help but think. Of course, thinking can sometimes be dangerous.
Zander was used to Luke's corny personality at that point. But what if it wasn't truly like that? What if Luke only acted like a golden retriever turned human to trick him? Of course, that's not true...or is it? Luke was really popular, after all. Why would he be with a short tempered, jealous person such as Zander? Heck, Zander wasn't even good enough for his own father to stay!
And of course, there was that day. Most people talked about it as the day Luke and Zander started dating. Zander of course knew it as that as well. But he would never forget the events prior to that...
It was only a kiss. A forced one, at that. But Zander couldn't forget how calm Luke had seemed after, and though he could understand that with Luke, it was still a bit surprising. And after that day, the situation was never brought up.
The more Zander thinks about it, the more Luke's corny nature feels like a coverup. It's a prank, it's all a lie, it isn't real, Luke never liked him. Tears started to prick at the corners of Zander's eyes, and he quickly wiped them away, making sure Hailey and Luke didn't see. He felt angry at himself for letting his emotions get the best of him like that. It was just a bad day, that's all. Yet, as the group entered the classroom, Zander's emotions clouded his mind, fogging up his thoughts.
You're not good enough for him
What makes you think he actually likes you?
It's a trick
He's better off with Stacey
He'll leave you
You'll hurt him
