In the tiny town of Roselake, lives a boy and his family. His rather small family were quite content with their lives. The boy, Jake, lives with his parents and a younger brother. Jake's brother is rather chaotic, but how many nine year olds aren't?
"Hey, Jake! Wake up! Mom's gonna get angry if you-," a voice calls out.
"Okay, okay. I heard you, Caleb." Jake says as he gets up from his comfortable bed, wishing that he could sleep a little longer. Caleb runs out of his brother's room giggling. Jake trudges towards the bathroom that is across from his room. Doing his hygiene, he hears his brother yelling for their mom. Fast footsteps can be heard outside of the bathroom door.
"What do you need help with, Caleb?" Jake hears his mom ask.
"I don't know where my favorite jacket is..." Caleb tells her.
"You left it downstairs, sweetie."
"Oh...thanks!"
Jake leaves the bathroom, almost running into his energetic brother. Their exhausted mom follows Caleb downstairs. He quickly goes into his room and changes into a black t-shirt and a pair of jeans. I better grab a jacket too, Jake thought as he grabbed a gray hoodie from his closet. Closing his closet, he stares into the mirror hanging on it. I have really bad bed hair, Jake thought to himself while chuckling. He walks towards his dresser, grabbing a hairbrush and begins to smooth out his coal colored hair. He looks at his reflection again in the mirror. Jake's brown eyes stare back at him. Okay, Jake. You got this! It's just your first day of high school, he thinks, trying to cheer himself up. His pep talk however has no effect. Jake couldn't help but feel nervous. He grabs his backpack and heads downstairs. Reaching the bottom step, he hears his mom lecturing Caleb in Vietnamese.
"You shouldn't sit there and watch TV! Hurry and eat. We're going to be late!" their mom yells in Vietnamese.
"Okay, okay..." Caleb responds in English. Jake sees his younger brother go into the kitchen to get cereal and milk. Loopy Foots...again, Jake thought, rolling his eyes. Caleb has an addiction to Loopy Foots. He eats them every single day.
"Why are you just standing there?! Go and eat your breakfast!" a voice snaps, snatching Jake away from his thoughts.
"Okay, mom..." he responds. In between all of the yelling, Jake and Caleb's father sits at the kitchen table quietly drinking his coffee while reading the newspaper. Caleb comes running into the kitchen again with an empty bowl that contains traces of milk. Jake toasts a slice of bread and looks as his little brother runs to the living room after dumping his bowl into the sink. Grabbing the slice of toast, he lathers jam on it before devouring the whole thing. Afterwards, he downs a glass of orange juice.
"Are you boys done eating? We have to go!" their mom yells from upstairs.
"Yeah, we're done mom!" Jake replies. He grabs his backpack and beckons his brother to get off the couch. Their mom comes rushing downstairs, wearing a simple white t-shirt and black leggings.
"Okay, boys! Let's go, before you both become tardy on your first day of school." she says, grabbing the keys from the kitchen table. Kissing her husband goodbye, she leaves through the front door. Jake and his brother say goodbye to their dad before rushing out the door too.
"Bye, you two! Have a good day at school!" their dad hollers at them. Caleb closes the door behind them and follows Jake to their mom's white Lexus.
"Caleb, I'm dropping you off first since your school starts before Jake's." their mom says while pulling out of their driveway.
