She Watched It Happen

Stevie watched Lindsey and Kristen from across the room. She sat silently, wincing at everything they did. She winced when Kristen whispered affectionately in Lindsey's ear; when she put her hand on his leg; and when she kissed him.

But Stevie wasn't so much wincing at what Kristen was doing. On the contrary, she was wincing at Lindsey's lack of response to his wife's actions of adoration. She winced when he had to ask what Kristen was she had whispered to him, because he hadn't been listening; when he brushed her hand off his leg; and when he turned his head so his wife's kiss would land on his cheek and not his lips. And Stevie knew exactly why he was doing this...

Stevie watched from across the room as Lindsey, Mick and John discussed a song together. She kept her eyes fixed on Lindsey's profile, enchanted by his still youthful appearance. How was it that she had aged and he hadn't? Was he a vampire? Stevie chuckled to herself; if Lindsey knew she was thinking these things, he'd tell her to stop being silly.

"What's so funny?" Lindsey asked, sitting down beside her. Stevie looked around the room; they were alone and she was instantly nervous. "Oh nothing." Stevie replied with a smile. Lindsey looked at her seriously. "What's wrong? You've been distant since..." He trailed off. Stevie's mind flashed back to her night with Lindsey. She shouldn't have let it happen. She shouldn't have let Mick leave; leave them alone together. If Mick had stayed... They wouldn't have started talking. Talking about all the things that had gone wrong, all the things they wanted so badly to fix. And then... Lindsey had kissed her. And she had kissed back. And they had slept together. And Lindsey had said the dreaded three words. Three words that he'd said so many times to her. But he shouldn't tell her that. He should be saying those three words to his wife.

But I should be his wife.

"Stevie?" Stevie came back into reality at the touch of Lindsey's fingers on her face. "Why are you crying?" He asked. "I'm not..." Stevie touched her cheek and felt the trails her tears had left. "Stevie, what's wrong?" Stevie looked up at him. "You falling for me again. And I'm just watching it happen." Lindsey took her hands in his and smiled at her. "Wait; listen to what I have to say."

Thrown down... like a barricade

Maybe now he could prove to her

That he could be good for her

And they should be together
