Adam and Nicholette had walked these trails a hundred times, but the moment was still special to her. They had been friends for ages, and every week they went to a clearing in the woods and watched the stars. Well, it used to be every week, but once Adam started dating Chloe, their hikes became fewer and fewer.
Adam was chatting about what was going on in his life since they last hung out, and even though the sun was sinking behind the horizon, Nicholette could see the grin across his face. He shook his shaggy hair out of his face and asked her how she had been.
"I've been well. Busy but well. I'm really glad we're finally hanging out though. I've needed this."
"Me too." Adam said, the grin fading quickly. Something was bothering him, and she had a guess as to what it was.
Chloe.
Chloe and Nicholette had been really good friends, but once she started dating Adam, something between them changed. Nicholette knew that she thought there was something between her and Adam, but there wasn't.
They walked the rest of the way in silence, and when they reached the clearing Nicholette had had enough.
"Alright. Spill. What's the problem Adam?" Nicholette questioned as she set up the blanket and pulled out the battery operated candles.
"Nothing? What makes you think something's wrong?" Adam said pulling out the snacks he packed.
"Adam Flanagan don't you lie to me. We have been friends for how long? I know when something's bothering you."
He sighed and lied down on the blanket. "Chloe and I had a huge fight tonight. She didn't want me to hang out with you, but I told her she had nothing to worry about. She flipped out, going on about you harboring a secret crush, and how you were just waiting for your chance to steal me from her."
Nicholette had grabbed the Oreos and was silently chewing on one. "I wouldn't do that. We're friends, or were anyways. I don't know why she'd think that."
Adam had sat up, holding his finger to his lips. He was scanning the woods straining his ears to hear the sound he thought he heard.
Nicholette saw it, and before she could warn him, a puff of smoke shot out of the woods towards her.
"LOOK OUT!" Adam screamed, lunging towards Nicholette to push her out of the way. Nicholette watched in horror as the smoke went through Adam and disappeared. He slumped forward, a soft scream escaping his lips.
Nicholette rushed over to him, rolling him onto his back. There were purple veins crawling up Adam's neck, the color draining from his face.
"Nicholette." He gasped, taking shallow breaths in. "Tell everyone...that I..." He didn't finish his sentence. Nicholette sobbed and held Adam's lifeless body close.
"I am so sorry Adam. I'm so so sorry. That wasn't meant for you. I was supposed to die. I won't let you go. Not like this."
She pulled out her phone, and called Jenny.
"Hey girl what's up?" Jenny's chipper voice shook Nicholette out of her sadness.
"I don't have time to explain myself so listen closely. Adam's dead Jenny, but I can bring him back to life, and I need your help."
