"I need to know that you understand what you're asking me to do, Will," the seemingly young brunette asks William Black as she tries to catch his eye from across the kitchen table, a steaming cup of tea before each of them. "You understand how this works?"
"I'll be honest," replies Billy, looking away from the French woman and into his tea. "I don't know much about it. Only what you've said. You said you can protect certain humans if you choose them, that you can keep them from getting hurt."
"I suppose that is the general idea," Ana laments lowly, her accent thick. Given her volume and accent both, Billy sometimes has to strain to understand what she's saying. Now is one of those times.
"What am I asking, Ana?" he continues.
"These bonds my kind create, they're lifelong, and if not, then particularly excruciating to break. I'd be tethered to her for the rest of her life, forced to follow her wherever she may go. Her pain will be my pain, her life will be my life, her soul mine to protect. I'll be compelled to give my life for this girl, Will... Now, I am willing to do this for you... however, I need to know that this feeling, this... suspicion that something's coming, is worth betting my life upon. I do not wish for you to come to regret this, or feel... responsible, should something run astray."
"What are the chances something will go wrong?" he asks, his eyes locked on Ana's.
"They're not too high, I suppose. She's just a normal teenage girl, correct? I understand you wish to do this for the sake of your friend, and I accept your request, but only if you're sure."
There's a silence that lingers throughout the deep, green and shadow kitchen, the sun long hidden behind the rain clouds that'd sprouted a downpour earlier that morning. Anastasie lifts her cup to her lips and takes a generous sip before reaching for a sugar cookie from the small pile residing on the plate central to the table.
"If you're willing to do this, Ana... then I'm willing to ask," Billy finally decides, moving his mug from one hand to the other, pivoting it gently against the hardwood tabletop.
"Very well," says Anastasie with a small smile. "Then take me to meet this Isabella Swan."
