SHE was born on a particularly stormy night. It was the night of October 31st, 1981, a day cursed for eternity. For, you know what they say, life must end in order for another one to begin. However, in this case, in order for Amara's life to begin, two innocent people, in the names of Lily and James Potter, had to end their own lives. Not willingly. It was simply their faith, a faith they were burdened with for their entire lives. A faith they simply had to give into in order to save the world from more sacrifice and destruction.
Adelaide Prewett — now Lupin, held her daughter safely in her arms, as her husband, Remus Lupin, went over to the Potter Cottage after the tragedy that had struck not so long ago. Night had already fallen, but the storm had just begun shortly after Amara Florence Lupin was born into the hideous world. She tried her hardest to fight the tears that were so stubborn spilling out of her eyes as she hugged her newborn tightly, waiting for her husband to arrive home.
"Shh, little red, it's all going to be fine, mummy loves you so much, daddy loves you so so much," Adelaide spoke softly as she heard her daughter's little snores. She was desperately waiting for the door knock, desperately waiting to hear her husband's obnoxious voices calling her weird nicknames, desperately waiting to hug him. He had promised her that he'd be back with Harry, with her godson. But now, it was almost one in the morning, and Remus Lupin was still nowhere to be seen. She sat down on the couch of her living room, and as she did so, Caroline put her head onto her lap. Adelaide watched both her daughters sleep while she was fighting the urge to sleep. She couldn't sleep; she simply could not; how could she sleep knowing that her husband, the love of her life, was out there possibly risking his life? Okay, not possibly. He was definitely risking his life, and she did not like the thought of him risking his life without her one bit. She was mad at him, furious at him, for leaving. Sure, she knew he was going to come back to her, he always did, but still, some part of her always wondered if it was the last time she was seeing him when he walked out that door. She was in deep thought about what she was going to do with two daughters, one three years old and the other barely even an hour old. Sure, Amara was newly born, so she wouldn't know what was going on at all, but Caroline was now three years old, meaning she'd be asking questions nonstop if Remus were never to return home. Adelaide could not bear the thought of having to explain to her daughter why her dad was not coming home anymore.
She was snapped out of her thoughts as she heard a knock on the door. She slowly got up, making sure not to wake Amara or Caroline up as she did so, and made her way to the door. She looked through the peephole and saw him, saw the sandy brown hair that she fell in love with since day one, not that she'd ever admit that to him; she unlocked the door as fast as she grabbed her wand and brought it to his throat. She hated doing this, especially after seeing the tears in his eyes, but it was a safety protocol she simply had to interrogate the love of her life to make sure he wasn't there to kill her or Amara. She knew already that by the look of his face, he was destroyed; after all, two of his best friends had died. But she couldn't comfort him. Not until she made sure that this was her Remus.
"What were the first words I said to you when we first met?" he immediately wiped his tears as a chuckle left his mouth.
"Watch where you're going, you big arsehole" It seemed as if he was trying his hardest not to laugh as he said this, which was odd because he was sobbing not too long ago, but at the sight of Adelaide and his daughters, his day brightened up, they were the sunlights of his life which was much needed because of how much he despised the moon. After the words left his mouth, she immediately lowered her wand and hugged him, making sure not to crush Amara in the process. After seeing the green light from her mother, Caroline rushed forward and also hugged her dad. However, she couldn't reach far, so she just settled on hugging his leg, which was enough for her because, after all, her father was alive, and that would always be enough.
"Woah there, I missed you too, angel eyes but be careful, or we are going to crush both of our daughters" he pulled away slowly only to be met with the angry face of Adelaide Prewett – Lupin. He slowly took Amara out of her hands and placed her onto the couch slowly, making sure to surround her with pillows so she wouldn't turn around and fall. She was a newborn, after all, no idea what they did when they were left alone. He turned back to Leda, and when he saw her expression and a big book in her hands, his eyes widened, and his smile immediately dropped. He raised his hands in surrender and started to slowly and carefully back away. His backing away attempts were blocked by his daughter, Caroline, who was still clutching onto him tightly.
"Care, I missed you too honey but daddy has to run away from mummy now. Can you please let go of my leg? I promise to give you a bunch of cuddles later okay?" Caroline nodded at this, it was a tempting offer, so she let go of his leg and backed away.
"YOU COMPLETE ARSE- " she was about to yell a bunch of not-so-colorful words when Remus shushed her.
"There are little ears present, Leda," he whispered, trying his hardest not to sound even slightly amused. As soon as he stopped talking, his arm was met by a large book, then his head, and so on. Caroline let out a small laugh at this as she climbed onto the couch next to her little sister. She picked up her sister, hugged her tightly, and watched the scene unfold in front of her. Soon enough, Leda got sick of hitting him with a book, so she got closer and started punching him in the chest continuously until he grabbed her wrists and looked down at her crying face. He was not about to judge her for that because he knew that she had lost just as much as he had. It took all of him not just to kiss her right there because knowing Adelaide, it would've made her even angrier at him.
"You scared the sh- " she met the gaze of Remus' "shirt out of me, you scared the shirt out of me you arse person." he pulled her in by the wrists he had previously grabbed and hugged her tightly, this wasn't an 'i love you' hug it was more of an 'i'm so glad you aren't dead' hug. He put his chin on her head as she rested her head on his chest.
"I am so sorry about James and Lily," she whispered into his chest; this only made him hug her tighter, and she felt him sob slowly. She didn't dare bring up Harry, because she knew that if he wasn't here, then Dumbledore hadn't let Remus take him in. Which quite literally pissed her off because who was he to say if she got to take care of her godson or not.
"I just can't believe they're actually gone, I mean, they were—they were alive yesterday, and I had just gotten to see James this morning. I just don't want to believe that my best friend—my brother...is actually gone. I can't believe that, Leda." he whispered slowly, his voice cracking. Adelaide pulled back from the hug and wiped his tears, then she hugged him again, not speaking. She knew that she shouldn't speak because no matter what she said, it wouldn't change the truth; it wouldn't bring back Lily or James. The words that were to leave her mouth would be completely meaningless. So she chose to stay quiet like she always had.
Shortly after they pulled away, Leda softly picked up Amara, while Remus picked up Caroline, and they headed to bed. No, contrary to popular belief, the kids would not be sleeping in their own beds tonight because both parents had a silent agreement on how they couldn't possibly let them go now, especially on this very cursed night. So they got in bed and hugged their daughters as tightly as they possibly could, thinking that a simple hug would save them or protect them from the world outside.
And as they lay on each side of their daughters, they realized that this was enough. That this little family they had built was enough for them, and it always would be, no matter the loss and tragedy surrounding them.
