---------------------------
It was time.

One last breath, and I would be out in the freezing cold of Yellowknife, Canada.

The winter has just started, and it has been harsh. It has been so cold, I have to switch the lock on more door every day.

Get supplies. Food, medical supplies, fuel.

I checked myself.

Backpack: check

Coat, sweater, shirt, gloves, hat: check, check, check, check and check.

I was ready.

I pushed the first lock off to the side, and pushed open the door. It easily glided across the snow covered ground. I put my hand in front of my eyes. The light of the sun bouncing off the snow was unbearable.

Once the light subsided, I shook my head a little.

Holy shit, it snowed a lot last night.

It really had. I had been living above a pizzeria ever since 'the crisis'. It was at an intersection, not a full blown one, but just to small streets combine into one. West street, the road across from the pizzeria was completely blocked off with snow.

I was getting lost in my mind.

I turned around and shut the red metal door with a shove.I pulled the newly heated padlock out of my pocket. It was already Beginning to get cold. I put the lock on the door, trying to open the door just to double check. It was locked.

I started down the street, taking in the scene. Shops, restaurants all partly destroyed with half the glass broken out. It was all the same, just a little more snow. I stopped walking and looked into the window of a café. They had a slogan that roughly said 'The best darn coffee in the world!'. It was hard to tell though as the window was broke in between different letters.

I became on focused and just stared at the window blankly for a moment. It was reflecting back an image of me, broken up among the shattered glass but nether the less still there.

I hadn't seen myself in a while. All the mirrors in my apartment had shattered from the cold, making it kind of hard. That was a-okay with me though, I never liked seeing myself. I was just a disgusting piece of filth that took up space.

I turned my head looking away, but then glanced back for a moment. I brought my fist back flush with my head and punched through the glass.

Fuck I'm stupid.

I looked at my hand, my glove was torn around the fingers, and bright red liquid was seeping out the cuts of the glove, and landing on the white.

Fuck, Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.

I turned down the street gripping my hand.

What the fuck is that?

There was a shimmering figure among the falling snow, it looked to be about 200 meters away.

I just stared at it, and it stared back. Eventually, I clicked:

It's a person.

I kept staring at them for a couple seconds in amazement. I had not seen another human since- well since the catastrophe happened. The figure turned away and started sprinting way. I was about to go after them but there was no way I could catch them.

I felt the wind pickup and the snow started coming down a little harder. I looked down at my watch. It was 10:34, I had left the house at 10:13. I was too slow. If I wanted to be back before dark I had to speed it up.

I started down the street again, jogging a little. It really started to pour down snow now. I could barley see my hands in front of me. My hands were getting cold to, right where I cut them. If I didn't get somewhere fast, I was going to get frostbite. I heard a sound behind me, almost like ice breaking. I sprinted behind a van and threw my bag up against it, not searing make a sound.

I stood up slightly from my crouched position, peeking through the window of the van. I didn't see anything, it was completely frozen.

Shit.

I looked around for anyway to see what was behind me, when I spotted a car with its mirror pointed to where I heard the sound. I looked at it for a moment, trying to see if there is something there, when I spotted a figure moving quickly past the mirrors field of view.

I didn't have anything on me but a knife, and with my good hand being injured, I wasn't ready for a fight. I did the only thing I could do: Run. I sat up from my position and bolted away, running faster then I ever have. I could feel my heart beating out of my chest, partly from the rush of adrenaline, and partly from being scared for my life.

I looked around carefully whilst still running, it felt like slow motion. I was looking for a place to hide or get supplies. Either or. Both also worked, but most shops around here were pretty open and didn't provide great cover, or concealment.

I spotted an orange glowing light in the distance. I head towards it, slowing down slowly as I did. As I neared it I saw it was the sign for the shooing centre. It read 'Yellowknife shopping centre! It is: -42c'

Well that's convenient

It really was. If I was out hear any longer, I could get frostbite, and there was no way I would recover from that in this weather. I looked behind me to make sure I still wasn't being followed.

I wasn't, but that doesn't mean much, because I literally could not even see my own hand in front of my face. I quickly turned back, opening the door to the shopping centre, and closing it quietly behind me.

A/N: Hey guys! So I would just like to point out that this is a re-written, more detailed version of a book I wrote for school. The original perspective was third person and I'm not used to writing in first person but I thought some parts in this book would work better with it.

Did I also point out there is more swearing? There is. So the first six chapters are already kind of thought out because my book only had six chapters, and to be honest they were pretty short. So this book will probably be short, I am trying to expand it more but I don't want to go off track to much from the original story. I might add more chapters, probably not though because it has a good ending in my opinion. There WILL be a second book if I don't extend this one anymore because I have some great ideas! Anyways, thanks for reading! (Sorry if updates are slow!)

You've reached the end of published parts.
