━━━━━━━ CASSIE WAS JEALOUS, which sounded pretty stupid when she was literally dying, but it was true. To her core she was a jealous girl.
She was grateful for what she had, she knew life could be worse, and yet she was jealous.
She was jealous at kindergarten of Mavis's Rooney doll, she was jealous Piper McLean's cool dad in sixth grade, she was jealous of those people who were never seen as superficial or stupid (as she was), she was jealous of those who had a home.
She never had anything to call her own, anything that had ever been of her property had scratch marks on it.
Her lungs and limbs burned, the oxygen slowly leaving her body, but after that is was peaceful.
No more bubbles came out of her, her vision got blurry, peace. The beating of a heart beating hard in her ears.
Percy swam to her, he tried getting as fast as possible. He cupped her face and blew her a bubble of air.
Soon she began opening her eyes.
"Hi," he smiled shyly. "Sorry for the delay."
She blinked, trying to hold her breath.
He smiled "it's okay now, you can breath."
"Your father believes in you." That wasn't Cassie or him.
Cassie widened her eyes. "What the hell was that?"
Then, through the gloom, They saw her- a woman the color of the water, a ghost in the current, floating just above the sword. She had long billowing hair, and her eyes, barely visible, they were green like Percy's.
Percy said, "Mom?"
"No, child, only a messenger, though your mother's fate is not as hopeless as you believe. Go to the beach in Santa Monica."
"What?"
"It is your father's will. Before you descend into the Underworld, you must go to Santa Monica. Please, Percy, I cannot stay long. The river here is too foul for my presence."
"But ...I."
"Who-how did you-"
"I cannot stay, brave one, the woman said." She reached out, and he felt the current brush his face like a caress. "You must go to Santa Monica! And, Percy, do not trust the gifts...."
Her voice faded.
"Gifts?" Percy asked. "What gifts? Wait!"
"That was another cryptic greek message. As if we needed more of those."
Percy sighed "yeah, it was."
She smiled at him reassuringly, "you'll see your mother soon Percy."
He seemed a bit lost in thought, "I hope so."
